The personal strife and ill feeling so long existing there, is gradually passing away, and we hope to see Ihe recent trouble put aside as past history. —The locomotive hauling the pas senger train due at this place 11:4">, was badly disabled Monday. The engine driver had just started his train at the Laporte station when a defective Hue bursted, blowing the lire from the box and soon emptying the boiler of water and steam. Another locomotive was soon procur ed and the train lost but little by the accident. —The case of A. C. Anderson vs Dr. John 11. The flames consumed 200.00ti feet of skidded logs; 100.000 feet of) sawed lumber, 10.000 lath, together with 100 feet of railroad track. The mill escaped with little damage. Mr. Arthur White acteil as best man and Miss Kittie Walburn as bride's maid. After the ceremonies the happy couple left for a short wedding tour. We join with their many friends in wishing them a happy and pros perous life. D. M. Wilcock who occupied the White House has removed his fam ily back to Towanda, where he will engage in business for himself. His many friends were loth to see him leave here. R. 10. Dons ton, Superintendent of S. L. A- S. R. R. Co. will move his family from Towanda to the White House at this place in the near future Atty. Jesus is the great commander, Forward, march, the victory is nigh. HiUigrove. The roads in Hillsgrove township are badly in need of repairs. While driving along the Elk Creek dug out, recently, Dr. Gamble had his horse so badly injured that he was compelled to hire another horse to return to Forksville. It is rumored that we are to have a railroad, in the near future. It will be built by the Union Tanning Company, from a point up Dry Bun where it will connect with the road being built by the Charles Sones Lumber Company. The distance is about five miles from Hillsgrove- Let it come, we are ready for it. Ezra Wager has accepted a posi tion as clerk in Vernon Hull's store. Mr. Wager is a t<"acher at Halls Academy, at Sharon, Pa., during the school term. Last Sunday the wind blew so terrifttc at times that a young couple from Elkland, were compelled to hold onto each other for fear they might blow away. Geo. Warburton of this place, who is working in the New York Cen tral car shops at Oak Grove, is here to visit his family. Geo. has a good job at the Grove. The new superintendent at the tannery, Mr. Dooly, transacted bus iness at Williainsport, last week. Bufus Boyles has moved from town to W. L. Hoffman's tenant house on the Hill, and Geo. Broni beek from the Union Tanning Co. hotel to the house vacated by P. Mc- Bride. W. L. Iloffman has just received in stock a fine lot of new style hats and caps. Ezra Little, Win. Boyles, and S. t. Galough atttended the Bepublican convention at Laporte, last week. Prank Weaver and wife of Water ville, were visiting at Chas. Jack son's, last week. Mrs. Weaver was formerly Miss Jackson of this place. No large catches of trout at this place, has been heard of this season. James Dutter is still walking witli crutches as the result of breaking his ankle several weeks ago. Jim says it is tough traveling. There was a scrap between two local sports and John Hall, Saturday evening. Mr. Hall came out on top. Messrs. Fulmer Jenkins and Al fred Strickland transacted business at Forksville, Satudray. Mr. H. Odell of Hughesville, is painting several buildings in town. Mr. Hines of Shunk was in town Saturily with that 2.40 horse. Hon. T. Malouly of Proctor, spent several days in town last week. Chalmer Cronian of Shrewsbury called on friends here Saturday. City fishermen are leaving, but not many trout are goiug with them* Mr. Joseph Bachlv and wife have arrived in town again. The new lights at the church drew quite a crowd Sunday evening. It would be a good thing to have a few more. Iticketta. For 'st fires destroyed a large num ber of hardwood logs for the Trexler A Terrel Lumber Co. at Lee Boad, on the 2:1. It re (uired half the mill hands, the factory men and the re maining men in and about the sta tion to prevent the lire from gaining a foot hold in the cluster of houses about the store. The Hungarian shanty occupied by L. V. section hands, caught tire and burned to the ground. The woman of the house was out trying to prevent the tire from gaining ground and left the children in the house and if it were not for some of the ottice men of the Lumber Company, who went in and rescued them, they probably would have perished. The temperature on the 22 and 2:! was close to HO in the shade; on the 24th, 30 to 40. Quite a change. Mrs. Bostwick is able to be up and about the house. The Trexler and Terrell Lumber Company expects to build a consider able amount of new track the pres ent summer. From re|>orts received the trout season so far has been very unsatis factory. Miss Lawrence and Miss Ditchburn the teachers in our public schools, went to their homes last week. Socially the |>eople will miss them, j ! as well as the scholars. Mrs. J. C. Schmelt/.er, of Mcy erstown Mission Supply of Lutheran j Church, preached morning and eve- j ning aud is staying this week with I the people. Death of Dewitt Oritmfin, Correspondence. Mr. Dewitt Gritman, one of our most resjiected and leading citizens and farmer, passed away at his home near Nordmont on Monday, April 21. For several months he was severe ly afflicted with abscess of the bowels which confined him to his room and deprived him of any rest, musing at times almost unendurable pains. During his illness his family and also his friends, who were the entire community, waited with anxious hopes, trusting that the tide might turn in his favor. But alas, Death is no respecter of person and cannot be arrested in his destructible advan ce, sweeping down upon a bright progressive home. Mr. Qritman came to Nordmont when a boy, sought employment on an early pioneer farm, and by indus try and economy paid for his beauti ful home. He was always identified with causes that advanced his com munity and country. He was a soldier of the civil war, a member of the 177 Regiment and served out his entire enlistment, having entered in the year 'O2. He was a prominent supporter of the M.E.church situated near his home. ife contributed largely for the aid of the poor. He was for many years an active and respected member of the 1. <). O. F. and (J. A. It.of Sonestown. The funeral was held in the Cherry Qrove M. K. Church on Wednesday afternoon. It was one of the largest witnessed for many years. The ser vices were conducted by Rev. S. li. Hid lack of Laporte, also by the I. <>. O. F. and the Grand Army. Four men, Hurt Hazen, Frank Magargel, Marcus Horn and J. C. Starr bore in advaiue of the remains wreathes of evergreen, lillies and flowers. The paid bearers were six of his old comrads in the war, J. V. Finkle, Asa Spear.v, George Kiess, W. M. Sherwood, Is. O. Speary and I). M. Speary. Mr. Gritman leaves a widow, four adult children and a bereaved circle of friends to mourn their loss. Eagles Mere. Apparently spring is here and we are glad of it. Miss May Mencer was the guest of friends over Sunday. She left on Tuesday morning for Vilas where she expects tospenda part of the summer at Iter father's home. The surveyors have been at work oil the line of the E. M. railroad exteution to chautauqua. Dr. Wackenhuth of Picture Hocks was called to attend Mrs. it, \V. Bennet, who is seriously ill. Mrs. Win. Fletcher spent last week with her sister, Mrs. ('asset bury, at Williainsport. Chas. Bedford of Williainsport lias been spending a few days with Ids mother here. Miss Grace Bradford of Laporte, spent a part of last week with friends here. A review will be taken of the new road front Kagles Mere to Forksville on May 12th. Mrs. W. 11. Vanßuskirk called on on her sister at Sonestown, one day last week. Messrs. K. B. Botsford and (). J. Sherman of Nordmont, were callers in town Sunday. A very pleasant evening was en joyed by all present at the club held at* Hotel Kagles Mere, Saturday evening. A number of young people were entertained at the home of Miss Ber nice Burkholdcr, in honor of Miss Mencer, on Friday evening. Shunk. Mr. and .Mrs. Dickenson of Forks ville, visited at W. H. Fannings, last week. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brenchley have returned to their home at Carbon dale, Pa., after visiting two weeks with the hitters parents at this place. Miss Nancy Kilmer is recovering from an attack of Tonsilitis. John Spencer of Union, Brad. Co. passed throng town recently. B. K. VanSyckie of Troy, and Theo. Pierce of Canton, Pa., are anglers here at the present time. Miss Jessie Forest of this place is spending some time with friends at Forksville. S. J. Hickok of Canton, Pa., is transacting business at this place, and draws good pay, he says, doing bench duty. Dr. B. K. Gamble was making professional calls in town Monday. Prof. M. B. Black of Forksville, was a caller in town last week. Mrs. Reubin Wilbur had the mis fortune to fall and severely cut her shoulder, one day last week. Dr. j Gamble is in attendance. A. B. Kilmer, Esq., was calling lon friends at Forksville, Monday. J. W. Frey expects to makean ex tended visit to his parents iu the southern part of the State.
