F. Everett, entailing a loss of $1,500 to that gentleman. How the fire started is not known, but it is supposed to be of incendiary origin. —General Funston, who was re cently operated upon in the Phillip pines for appendicitis, will soon be given leave of absence and return to the United States to recuperate. According to advices, the general is recovering rapidly. Carrie Nation, the Kansas smash er, will pay Williamsport a visit, says the Sun. Whether she has heard of any Williamsport "joints" that she thinks should be token care of, or whether her mission is one of peace, has not yet developed. But one thing is certain —she will be there some time next week. If there-are any holes-in-the-wall there they had better keep a sharp look out for Carrie and her hatchet; for the smasher has the reputation of drop ping in on such places without warn ing, or waiting for the formality of an introduction. Tammany has been defeated in New York, and for the next two years that city will be under a Re publican administration, with Seth Low at the head. The exact figures by which Boss Crocker and his or ganization are to measured are not obtainable. But even the Tamma ny leaders admit Low's election by a plurality of 30,000. It is proltable that the official count will show Shepard's defeat by a much larger majority. I Democracy's Foot is Firmly Planted on One Man Rule. The Vote as Shown by the Return Sheets. The Democratic party in this coun ty has shown that it will not con sent to be used as a tool l>y one man. The vote shows that the party is tired of Scouten and Walsh; as he run decidedly behind his party vote in every democratic district. \\ alsh made surprisingly large gains in Fox and Elkland, but these two townships are alone in Walsh's big gains. Nelson Cox made a good showing and he has reason to feel proud of his endorsment in his home districts. His vote in Bernice shows that Sul livan county would have made no mistake in electing him. James Deininger's vote was an endorsement of him where best known, and against almost any candidate except Thos. E. Kennedy, would have been elected. Mr. Ken nedy has a strong personal following which could not be overcome, and he owes nothing to the boss for his election. State Gives a Big Republican Majority. AS LARGE AS TWO YEARS AGO Republicans Sweep the City of Philadelphia. Republican counties show major ities about as large as two years ago, when Barnett had 110,000 plurality. Nearly every Democratic county shows a loss. Fusion proved a very disastrous experiment. The esti mate so for received, with compu tations on others based on the last State election, indicate a majority for the Republican ticket of about 100,000. —Dr. E. J. Gray, president of Dickenson Seminary, announced last week that, by order of the board of directors, all fraternities at the school must be abolished. Dr. Grey denounced the fraternities detrimen tal to the advancement of the i/.'pils in literary knowledge. "The sole object," he said, is for feasting. It is sometimes the ease that a member desires to obtain an official position within the gift of the Seminary. Then the fraternities are used for electioneering purposes, and the members usually take more interes in that kind of work than study, which results in much harm. Last Sabbath was a victorious day in the M. E. Church for the aged people. By previous announcement Rev. Bidlack invited the public and especially the old folks of our com munity to attend a special program which he spared no time to prepare for their benefit. The church edifice was gorgeously decorated and festooned with ever greens, flowere, ferns and many kinds of vegtables. The rocking chairs for the aged people, and the pumpkins, squashes, apples and corn gave to the room a puritan ap pearance that resembled a home of our early fathers when log cabin were considered mansions. And fruits were prepared for the long winters by drying them on strings and racks. The most impressive adornment was a beautiful cross trimmed in deep green runningvine, and hung above the pulpit. The old fashioned "Love feast" was ad ministered by the pastor in the morning at 0:H0 lasting an hour. The choir sang two beautiful se lections prepared for the occasion, and old familiar hymns were sung with feeling. Rev. E. G. King of Williamsport, preached a strong sermon on"The Holy Bible our safe guide." And administered the Holy Communion. The attendance was large.
