After a lingering illness, Judge
Henry Hilton died at Saratoga, N. Y.
Twenty-five per cent, of the wheat
crop in the Williamette Valley of Ore
gon, is reported unmarketable.
Two bodies of men, one nude, and
badly bruised, have been washed
ashore at North Beach, L. I.
The transport Sherman, .with Cali
fornia volunteers, returning from Ma

Mrs. Anna Teeple, of Charlestown,

The advance in the price of matches
is said to be due to the purchase by

Idaho union miners have decided to
submit to the "permit" system inaugu
rated by the state authorities during
the recent strike.
The Mexican Embassy at Washing
ton has begun an investigation of the
alleged torture of Mohican prisoners
in the Hidalgo County (Texas) Jail.
Governor Itoosevelt has denied the
application of Major Clinton B. Smith,
of the Seventy-first Regiment, for a
stay in the inquiry to determine his
fitness.
The transport Valencia and Zcalan
dia. with 7!>o Montana volunteers and
■too men belonging to other organiza
tions on board, have left Manila for
San Francisco.
The Pennsylvania Republican Con
vention was completely controlled by
Oua.v. A resolution praising the Gov
ernor for appointing him Senator was
adopted. Senator Penrose in his speech
as temporary chairman cordially in

dicted his renomination and re-election.

toboggan ride on a handcar on the
Doylestown and Newtown trolley track
here, twelve-year-old Charles fielser
wis killed. Allie McGinty and Alfred
Mcintosh, thirteen years olcl, were
fatally injured, and twenty other boys
of about the same age were hurt, some
so seriously that they will carry the
uuirUs lor life.

sulted in a broken nose and badly
lacerated face.
The Hand gave a concert and festi
val Saturday evening,but owing to
the heavy rain they were not as suc
cessful as on former occasions.

the defunct league of Wilkes-barrie.

Chas.Hood,age ten years, son of
Paul Mood,fell and broke his arm
one day last week, while playing
ball.
Harry Basley, delegate from
Washington Camp No.IKI of this
place, and H.W.Taylor,attended the
State Convention of the P.< >.S. of A.
at Wilkes-barris,last week.
Mrs.Joseph Helsman, spent last
week at Wilkesbarrio, taking in the
sights of the convention.
Lightning struck the residence of
.1. S. Taylor, during the heavy
shower Saturday evening, hut did
do much damage with the exception
of throwing the stove pipes out ot
the chimneys and tilling the house
with soot.
The Citizens .Military Band,of this
place will be at Laporte, Friday
evening, Sept. Ist. The concert will
be free, so every body is invited to
come. After the concert a dance
will be given in Gallagher's new
hotel, the band will furnish music
for the dance. Refreshments will be
served.
