the Government has resolved to take

Beach Railroad Company, to he either
operated steam or electricity, about

Loudon, Aug. 21.—The Ronrd of
Trade bankruptcy report for 1898
shows an increase of 25(5 in the number
of failures. Commenting upon the
Ilooley failure, the report says: "Reck
less and extravagant methods of pro

are warned to distrust ornamental di

New York. Aug. 21. Prices for ajl
meats for the consumers were raised
with a jump at a mass meeting of the
Retail Butchers' Association of this
city in Nos. 01.1-017 Eighth avenue.
These advanced prices take effect at
once, and must be paid equally by the
owner of a Fifth avenue home, who
sends butler or chef to market, and
by the meek and lowly Hat dweller,
who receives his supply by way of the
dumbwaiter.
Loureuzo Marques, Delagoa Bay,
Aug. 22. The Government of the
South African Republic is making
strenuous efforts to persuade the local
Portuguese authorities to permit the
passing of ammunition. Presdent l'aul
Kroner personally has wired a request
to that effect, stating that a modus
vivendl with Great Britain is assured.
Two thousand cases of atyns are due
to arrive here today on the German
steamer Kotiig. from Hamburg.
New York. Aug. 22. The Ward Line
steamship Vigilancla. which left the
f(tot of Wall street last Wednesday
afternoon with about fifty passengers,
bound for Havana, is forty-eight hours
overdue. No anxiety i* expressed at
her agents' office in this city, tliey say
ing that she undoubtedly encountered
some storm which has detained her.
New York. Aug. 22.- Joe Bernstein
of New York won almost as he pleased
from Solly Smith of California In their
tight in the Broadway Athletic Club.
Bernstein beat his adversary down tn

round. All that was exciting and dra
matic came In the twelfth and thir
teenth rounds, and when John White,
the referee, counted off the ten sec
onds the ring was surrounded by a

Havana, Aug. J!).—A republican
party is forming that proposes to make

Chicago. Aug. 19. A despatch to the
"Tribune" from Belleville. 111., says:
"The condition of Jehu Baker lias
changed little. His fever lias abated
somewhat, but he is weak anil his
heart's action is faint. With the ex
ception of one or two old frleniis, cal
lers are not permitted to see him.
Shiloh. Me., Aug. 19. More than
5.000 people assembled in Durham, on
the Androscoggin Hirer, to dedicate
the temple erected by Rev. !•'. W. San
ford and his adherents, as the head
quarters of believers in the Church of
the Living <iod. Work on this struc
ture. which is one .if the largest In the
state, was begun in March, and Mr.
Sanford and his followers hold that it
has been completed through a miracle,
claiming that unless the 200 builders
who have worked night and day for
the past twenty days, had been in
spired with strength not their own.

Greenville. S. P.. Aug. 19. —For being
In the bedroom of a white girl. Tom
Keith, a negro, was hanged to a tree
and shot to pieces by a mob of infuri
ated citizens. Keith was found in
the bedroom of the thirteen-year-old
daughter of T. H. Hawkins, Jr.. a
farmer who lives about eight miles
from here. Keith was an old and
trusted farm hand, and when he pro
tested that he was drunk and had
wandered In there accidently Hawkins
let him go. The occurrence was soon
noised around the neighborhood and a
mob quickly organized. The negro
was caught, and liis body, after the
lynching, was weighted with stones
and thrown into the Saluda River.
Warsaw. X. Y.. Aug. 21.—Yesterday
was a great holiday for the farmers
of Western New York. Whole towns
were almost depopulated by flic ex
cursion trains to Silver Lake. where
the twenty-seventh annual picnic of
tlie Wyoming Co. Pioneers was held.

Rochester and I.ake Ontario Telephone
Company, to operate in Syracuse,
Rochester. Oswego. Auburn. Geneva
and Intermediate places, has been in
corporated with the Secretary of State.
