week.
Joseph Ilelsinan represented Wash
ington Camp No. 481 of this place at
the State Convention of P.O.S. of A.
at York Pa., last week. He reports
a grand time.
Mrs. J. S. Taylor who has been
ill for some time was taken to To
wanda for treatment. At last report
she was doing nicely and expects to
soon be home again. She is accom
panied by Mrs. Danniel Hoffa who
is taking care of her.
Pay night here Monday evening of
last week. Mr. Baldwin of Towanda
did the paying.
A number from here attended the
dance at Cherry Mills Tuesday eve
ning.
Insurance Agent M. A. Scurenian,
of Dushore, was doing business in
town Tuesday and Wednesday of
last week.

Dr. Murrey visited friends at Sayre
last week.
Mrs. Gregory of Wilkesßarre was
the guest of Mr. and Mrs. George

Miss Mary Hannon left on Satur
day for New York City, to visit her
sister Miss Thressa.
The young men held it box party
in the K. of 1». Hall Thursday eve
ning. The girls brought the boxes
and took the boys to lunch. After
a few hours of dancing the young
people left for their homes well
pleased with the evening's enjoy
ment.

burg, is visiting his brother 11. J.
Keller of this place.
Bev. Campbell was doing business
iu Wilkesßarre Saturday.
Rev. J. A. Enright visited friends
at Allegheney N. Y., last week.
A Battle Axe Tobacco agent front
Williamsport while coming down
the Whith House hill Friday, had
the misfortune to brake the neck
yoke, causing the team to run away
and smashing the wagon very badly.
The team was caught at the lower
end of Main street. No other dam
age was done aside from the wagon
and sample tobacco. The boys help
ed themselves, and now have a stock
on hand.
John Schaail, Sr. and wile left on
Tuesday for an extended visit to
Germany.
Messrs. Veil llolcomb, James Cor
cou and Ben Crossley of Dushore,
were the guests of Gordon Saxon
Sunday.
Mrs. C. M. Croll and Mrs. John
Hainer of Dushore, visited at Mr.
and Mrs. H.W.Taylor on Sunday.
The Citizens' Band held an ice
cream festival and concert Friday
and Saturday evenings. <>n account
of the rain it was held in the I. O. ().
F. Hall Friday evening and on B.IL
Guy's lawn Saturday evening. A
large crowd was in attendance both
evenings. Gross receipts, $47
The Band requested us to thank the
people for their liberal patronage
and assistance.
The little ball club from here went
to Import*' Saturday and played
with the little nine of that place.
They came home victorious; we did
not learn the score.
The Band will leave Friday morn
ing for Laeyville, where they will
enter the contest. We wish the
boys success.
Saturday there was a very interest
ing ball game here, Lopez vs Bernice.
The second nine of this place and
what was supposed to be the second
nine of Lopez, but a number of their
tirst nine players were among them.
Our boys held them pretty level
until the last two innings. The
score of the game was, 10 to 111 in
favor of Lopez.

Mrs. E. J. Lock wood and children,
arc visiting relatives at Elimsport.
Miss Lizzie Miller of Tivoli, lists
for the past few days been'the guest
of Miss Hose Simmons.
A large dog sprang upon Miss
Myrtle Edgar while wheeling up
town last Monday. The struggle re
sulted in a torn dress and two fleeing
parties—girl and dog.
The annual picnic of the M. E.
Sunday school went to Eagles Mere
on Wednesday.
The world famed evangelist, I>. L.
Moody is expected to pass through
town the last of this week en route
to the Bible conference to be lirld at
Eagles Mere the coining Saturday.
The latest sensational query is:
"Have you heard about the ghost?"
It is whispered that one makes its
appearance in the upper end of town
about "> o'clock p. m.—a very un
usual hour for spiritual phenomena.
The Sonestown schools will open
September 2"», with Mr. and Mrs.
.1. Lyman Snyder, of Forksville, as
teachers. Mr. Snyder taught here
four years ago and his excellent
work that time is sufficient to make
both him and his wife eagerly wel
come.
William Bobbins owns a field of
very large corn. Some of the stalks
are about fourteen or fifteen feet
high, supporting three ears of corn
eleven and one-half inches round and
as long proportionately. Twenty
two rows of corn grains have been
counted on some of the Cobs of his
sweet corn. Raccoons from the
neighboring woods have torn down
a number of the stalks to feed upon.

Prof. L. L. Ford Entertains.
On Saturday evening the new
and beautiful home of Prof, and Mrs.
L. L. Eord was the scene of an highly
enjoyable social affair, the host hav
ing invited a party of his friends to
take tea with himself and Mrs. E.
Indue time the Prof, announced
that the hauquct (lie called it tea,)
was ready and the party tiled into
the dining room and enjoyed it feast
tit for the kings. The coterie was
comprised of Mr. and Mrs. Kitts,
Prof. (F. Michener, Ye Editor,
the host and hostess, and daughter
Miss Mabel. At a seasonable hour
the company departed, having spent
a highly enjoyable evening with the
Prof, and his estimable wife.

A local Advisory Board in connec
tion with the Children's Home
Society of Pennsylvania was organ
ized on Sunday evening after services
in Methodist church. Following is

Sick Soldiers End Their Journey.
Harrisburg, Aug. :io.—The Penn
sylvania hospital train containing
sick and injured soldiers from the
southern camps, reached this city at
2:1") o'clock this morning in charge
of (Jovernor Hastings. The train
was run over the Cumberland Valley
track to the door of the Harrisburg
hospital, where the pavement had
been roped off to keep back the large
crowd of people which had assembled
even at that hour. Accomodations
had been prepared for seventy-Ave
patients, but only nineteen were
taken from the train here, a larger
number than was expected having
been taken from the train at Altoona
and other stations en route to this
city.

Pursuant to a call, tlu; Republicans
of Sullivan county through their
representatives met in convention
at Laporteon April 0, isiis. After
disposing of urgent business it was
deeiued proper to defer the naming
of a local ticket until a later date,and
convention on motion adjourned to
meet at the call of the County Chair
man. I now desire to reconvene
said convention on Tuesday, Kept. <>,
1898, at Court Mouse, in Laporte at
'2 o'clock p. in., for the purpose of
nominating a local ticket to lie voted
for at the coming election in Novem
ber, and any other business that may
properly come before the convention.

Hillsgrove.
It becomes our sail duty to report
the death of Walter F. Warburton a
very much respected resident of this
place. Mr. Warburton was horn in
the year 1K49 on the farm where he
was living at the time of his death.
In his early manhood he united
with the Methodist church and has
been a faithful worker in that body
all his life. Me leaves a wife, son
and two daughters to mourn his loss.
Interment took place in Hillsgrove
cemetery, Tuesday afternoon. Rev.
Mosier olticiating.

Russel Biddle, who has been very
low with typhoid fever is slowly re
covering.
N. A. Mortlthrop attended the
State Convention of I'. O. S. of A. at
York, l'a., during the past week,
and took in the sights of the State
Capitol and Gettysburg on his return.
M. K. Plunibstead M.D., of Say re,
who has been practicing in town
during the past week, was taken sick
Sunday, symptoms being typhoid
fever, lie was accompanied to his
home by 11. A. Green.
Hillsgrove and Picture Rocks
crossed bats over the home diamond
Saturday. Results, lit to in favor
of the Rocks.
A party from Proctorville came to
see the ball game ami for a scrap
Saturday last. They were accomo
dated, and left town early Saturday
evening looking rather the worse
for their visit. We enjoy a little
thing like that occasionally.
Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Green left on
Monday for a two weeks visit with
friends in Bradford county.
Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Brauinheck
are visiting friends at Muney.
A back door to a church is not
always a good thing unless it is lock
ed.

President McKinley lias gone to
New York and will spend a couple
of days in camp at Montauk Point
and Camp Wikoff, so as to correctly
inform himself as to the condition of
affairs and the truth of the reports
I that have been circulated.
