FIRE RAGES IN DUSHORE.

store were damaged by tire and wat
er to the extent of several thousand
dollars Sunday night. The tire orig
inated in the eellar, the cause being
unknown, and was discovered at
about 7 o'clock.
The flames spread rapidly through
the building and by the time the
firemen had reached the scene the
whole second floor or rather that
part of the building given over to
the storage of cofllns was a mass of
flames amTsmoke and to all appear
ance the building seemed doomed.
But the heroic tire fighters, nothing
daunted, struggled hard with the
stubborn flames, playing flvo steady
streams of water with the hose anil
assisted by the bucket brigade fought
the flames until overcome. Luckly
the blaze was kept within the con
fines of the structure, had it reached
the exterior, adjoining buildings
could not have been saved.
The stock of eight hundred coffins
is an almost total loas while the fur
niture on the first floor not burned
up being badly damaged by heat and
water. Most of the damage done to
Cole's Hardware establishment was
effected by water and the many
articles broken by the reckless man
ner in which the building was reliev
ed of its wares.
During the desperate efforts to
stay the progress of the flames several
accidents occured. Dane Carpenter
was working on a ladder al>out twen
ty feet from the ground, when the
ladder gave way and he fell, lie
was stunned by the fall and inflicted
several bruises about his body Jas.
Cook was inside the building when
he fell through the floor and hurt in
ternally. Ed. Cannon inhaled smoke
and went out of service as a fireman.
BRINGING OKDEK OUT OF CHAOS.
Business was not haulted in Cole's
Hardware store. laborers began
moving debris and getting damaged
places in shape early Monday morn
ing. The street that was fairly
bloekaded with good was cleaned up
by noon and the articles carried back
into the store.
The loss will figure up into the
thousands. Fully covered by insur
ance.

Dr. Murray of Sayre, has opened
an office in Hotel Jackson. The doc
tor comes well recommended as a
physician and surgeon. This town
has been in need of a good doctor
and we hope Dr. Murray will locate
permanently.
The S. L. &8. Co. broke all pre
vious records in this State by paying
their employees three times during
the month of May, under the semi
monthly pay law.
Miss Margaret Wright visited
friends in Towanda and Waverly
last week.
Soloman Burns has purchased
three lots in Shinersville.
Andrew McGeever returned to
this place Tuesday from California
where he has finished a live year in
listment in the United States army.
He was allowed a rebate of three
months each year for continous ser
vice.
Daniel Donovan visited friends at
Waverly N. Y., last week.
Joseph O'Neal visited friends at
Greenwood Thursday of last week.

A large number of our citizens ac
companied the band to Dushore on
Memorial Day to honor the memory
of our departed heroes who gave their
lives so that our country might live.
Miss Amy Kelly who has been en
joying a vacation of two weeks at
her home in Leroy, return**! to this
place Wednesday.
Mrs. Joel Saxon visited friends in
Dushore on Thursday.

Sunday morning, May :J9, the
lord's supper was administered in
the Presbyterian church by ltev. Dr.
Brooks of Wilkes Barre, assisted by
Rev. J. C. Campbell pastor. In the
evening Rev. l)r. Brooks preached a
very interesting and able memorial
surmon which was enjoyed by a
large congregation. The church
looked beautiful decorated with
flowers and flags.

of the Presbyterian church is practis
ing and getting ready for Childrens
Day services which takes place this
month.
Gordon Saxon closed his term of
summer school Saturday last.
Mrs. Parsons and son, of Wilkes

morning for New York city to visit
his family for a few days.

A very pretty home wedding was
celebrated Wednesday afternoon at
the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James
Ramsey, when their oldest daughter
Miss Jeanette and Mr. Charles Cook
were united in the lwmds of matri
mony by Rev. J. W. Klingler of
Dusliore. Miss Tena Ramsey, sister
of the bride acted as bridesmaid, and
David Cook, brother of the groom, as
best man. A large number of the
young couple's friends witnessed the
ceremony, after which a bountiful
repast was partaken of. The ITEM

The 40 hours Devotions opened in
the St. Francis church Sunday morn
ing at 11.30. The opening ceremo
nies were very beautiful. Rev. Fr.
Green of Overton preached a very
interesting sermon in the evening.
Edward Mannix and Edward
White attended the A. O. 11. Con
vention at Seranton this week. Mr.
Mannix went as delegate from Di
vision No. 1 of Bernice.
William Johnson of Pittsburg is
visiting friends here this week. Mr.
Johnson expects to locate at this place
July 1. He has accepted the position
of mine foreman for the company
opening the new mine.
John Moor of Overton met with a
serious accident Monday afternoon of
last week, while at work pealing
bark for Patrick Dorsey on the Jack
son tract, one mile west of Bernice.
He and his mate cut a hemlock tree
against which a beech tree was lean
ing. When the hemlock started to
fall they ran away. The beech in
stead of following the hemlock turn
ed and fell at right angle to it and
caught Moore, pinning him to the
ground. His mate hallooed for help
to get him loose. Some men work
ing at the new mine ran to his assis
tance. W T hen Moore was taken out
from under the tree it was found that
both his legs and right arm were
broken. He also complained about
his hips. He was taken to the Pack
er hospital in Sayre on the evening
train.

County Convention of P. O. 8. of A.
The county convention of the sev
eral camps of the P. O. S. of A. of
Sullivan county will be held at Hills
grove 011 June 17, 1898. This will
be a large gathering of the patriotic
people ot the county, and a general
invitation is extended to every lover
of the stars and stripes. Members of
the order arc earnestly requested to
be present. Able speakers will be
present, among which will be State
Vice President A. U. Leecher, of
Berwick. A public meeting' will be
held after which a business meeting
will be held in the P. O. 8. of A. halJ
for the transaction of such business
as may come before the convention.

Spanish Ports Were Silenced.
Jamaica, Tuesday, June 7.—The
American fleet this morning engaged
the Spanish batteries defending the
entrance of the harbor of Santiago de
Cuba and after a three hours' bom
bardment, silenced all the forts and
rendering them useless.

carpenters at work 011 cottages and
other buildings and he is to double
the number immediately.
The new kitchen at the Inn is to
go up forthwith if not sooner. It will
double the cooking capacity,increase
the dining room space so as to seat
one hundred guests at one time and
provide dormitories for the entire
force connected with the Inn. The
refrigator space is to l»e doubled al*
so and the management expect to be
pretty well crowded even with the in
creased facilities.
The office at the entrance is to be
remodeled and will l>ecoine really
the general office where all tickets
will be furnished,guests will register,
thepost office will de provided and the
collegians in charge will l>e in very
comfortable quarters.
Sidewalks will he improved and ex
tended, the streets will have atten
tion and things generally move along
Indications point to a continued in
creased in attendance every year.
The program is now in the printers
hands and will furnish a variety to
meet all tastes. Art, music, litera
ture, science, oratory, i>edagogy,
kindergarten, amusement, cooking,
dress cutting, phy sieal culture, in
struction in swimming and rowing,
hygienic exercise, wheeling and
more beside.
The management regrets very
much that the teachers of Sullivan
County could not accept their invita
tion to take it all in free of cliarge.
The Christian Endeavor Conven
tion will occupy the week from June
29th to July 7th. This lias l>een
made possible by the hospitality of
the hotels.
The llihle School of the Young
Mens Christian Association has lieen
invited to come to Eagles Mere in
September and make it the home for
the school permanetly.
The Y. M. C. A. of Williamsport,
Milton and Danville are considering
plans for a permanent camping
place near the Chautauqua Park.
Capt. Chase is enlarging and im
proving the Athletic Field as he can
when he gets at work of that kind.
