Laporte Pa., Mr. Wu, the Chinese Minister, -was a guest at the last Gridiron Club din ner In Washington, and was at first somewhat puzzled regarding the fun that always goes with a Gridiron din ner. When one of the members stop ped the winner to complain of the soup and the President demanded that the soup pot be brought in, to see what gave the peculiar taste complained of, Mr. Wn looked serious and inquired ol his neighbor if the trouble could not be adjusted without breaking up the din ner. He saw the hotel proprietor brought in, and then the soup pot, and he expected to see trouble over the dinner before it was served. But when the President of the club fished out a civil service reform bill from the pot as the source of tho complaint against the soup, the Chinese Minister saw the humor of the aflair and from that moment there was no guest who caught on quicker or enjoyed more the jokes of the Gridiron than did he. Otto Long who has been in Nordmont the past winter was home over Sunday. Miss May Mencer stopped in town enrouted for Blooinshurg Normal. Miss Mattie Secules of Ed kin Hill has been paying a short visit to relatives here. Mrs. Peter Gavitt of Laporte is visiting her daughter Mrs. J. W. Buck. A runaway occurred on the Elk Lick road above town last Sunday. The occupants of the buggy were Charles Starr, wife and child. Be yond a broken wagon no damage was done. Mr. and Mrs. Eli Bostian were Laporte callers on Saturday. At the mock court last evening the prisoner was convicted despite the heroic efforts made by his coun sel, H. C. Boatman to save him. J. F. Hazen was prosecuting Atty. acting for Oscar Miller, lish ward en who preferred charges against Harry Starr for violation of fish law and Sabbath breaking. The Judge, F. H. Gallagher tempering his charge with mercy gave only some good advice and fixed a pen alty compelling prisoner to catch the judge a mess of trout. A very pleasant time was enjoy ed at the entertainment. The play ers acquitted themselves excellent and the house was crowded. Re ceipts, $10.30. E. J. Lockwood was the recipi ent of a number of useful and pret ty articles on Monday evening in honor of his birthday. A company of young people surprised him about nine o'clock, and games were then in order until about 3 a. m. A very pleasant evening was spent. Those present were, Misses Anna and Leah Hazen, Ada Hall, Alia Magargel, Bertha McClintock, Maud Starr, Mattie Secules, Pearl Keeler, Myrtle Edgar. Messrs, J, F. and Walter Hazen, Harry and Clint Starr, Alvin Steck, Jesse Loveless, Ralph Magargel, Ed. Hazen, Will and Al. Starr. Mrs. Catherine Hall of Hughes ville returned home after a winter spent in this neighborhood. W. B. Hazen is attending the Ganoga Hill institute near Central. Rev. Mr. Skinner of Laporte was here last week. He will give a lecture illustrated with stereopti can views in the E. Y. church on Friday evening.
