Several saw mills will be erected
along the Mill Creek and Loyalsock
valleys this spring and to accommo
date the lumber trade in this vicinity

as many candidates in the field this

Judge Dunham requested them to

Judge Dunham was plain in his
charge to the constables, Monday.
Lie said they would be expected to
comply with the Act requesting
constables to make monthly visits to
licenses places and report to the
court any violation ot the liquor
law. The whiskey dealers of SullU
van county had better give this
matter a thought. Judge Dunham
means what he saj-s and a word to
the wise ought to be sulllcient.

d Act Relating to Constable*.
k Be it enacted, etc., that section 1
i- of an act, entitled "An act to autho
y rize the election of constables for
II three years," approved the 14th day
n of February, A. D. 1889, which reads
as follows:
"That the qualified voters of every
1 borough and township, and when a
borough is divided into wards, of
a every ward in tho Commonwealth of

Pennsylvania shall, on tho third
e Tuesday of February next, and tri
-1 annually thereafter, vole for and
elect a properly qualified person for
- constable in each of said districts,
2 who shall serve for three years," be
s amended so as to read as follows:
j That the qualified voters of every

every ward in the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania shall, on the third
Tuesday of February A. D., 1896,
and tri-annually thereafter, vote
for and elect a properly qualified
person for constable in each of said
districts, and a proper qualified per
son for high constable in each of
said boroughs and the person so
elected shall serve three years.
A number of defeated candidates
Cor the ollice of constable in Sulli
van county are of the opinion that
they were entitled to hold the ollice
of constable for a term of three years
from the date of their election and
r.hat they were unjustly deprived of
the same. They claim the above
amendment is unconstitutional and
they seriously contemplate testing
the same in the courts of justice.
Anthony Flynn, of Smith,s Mills,
Clearfield county, was in William
sport recently, and brought with him
an interesting relieof aboriginal days
which is now on exhibition at Geo.
VV, Harder's gun store, on Pine St.,
says the Gazette. This consists of
an Indian scalping knife, imbedded
in a piece of the trunk of a pine tree.
Tho handle of the knife had long
since disappeared and the eight inch
blade was rusty with age. The
tree from which this knife was taken
was cut on the head waters of Clear
field creek, in Cambria county. The
blade was imbedded twenty feet
from the ground, and as the tree
counted one hundred and seventy- ■
five rings from tho point of the .
knife to its hilt it would indicate
that the blade had been in that
position for almost two centuries.
The stamp on the side of the knife ;
consists of the representation of a
crown and a bottel, and it was no i
doubt imported from England in the
early days of tho colonies and was
probably traded to the redskins. It
is a wonderful curiosity, and will t
attract the closest attention of all
interested in relics of the past. C

Colliers, W. Va., Feb. 24.—A re- j
cent find here, it is claimed, clears j
up a mystery of thirty-two years' l
standing—the remains of four J
human beings having been discover-
ed in an abandoned coal mine a mile
east of here.
David Snyder lias explored the
old mine which lias not been worked
since the CO's and discovered human
boues. One of the skeletons was
sitting upright against a lodge.
Beside this skeleton was found a
tlask containing a note that explain
ed the mysterious disappearance of
John Ewing, Ben Ay res, Tom Aekel
son and Joe. Obuoy, thirty-two
years ago. The notes were written
in pencil, but well preserved. They
read as follows:
November 2, 18C3.
Should this ever reach the out«
side world let it be known that we
(giving names) arc prisoners here,
owing to the caving in of the mine.
We aro deserters and was in hiding
here when the mine caved in. Food
and water all gone. We are doom
ed, as no one outside is aware of our
whereabouts. This is about the
Hth day of imprisonment.
