rtiIDAY DECEMIIER 18, 1*95
KaHlarm ol the W t rk.
Business is still sluggish as if gorg
ed by exoMftive indullgence of the
• pp-'tite for buying when prices
were advancing. In nearly every
branch stocks not yet distributed tio
consumer# stand in the way of new
order*, and competition of a pro
ducing force largely exceeding the
present demand puis down prices,
that decline retarding purchases yet
raore. After the holidays men look
for a larger demand, whether large
enough to support all the producing
force awakened to activity by the
Abnormal rush of buyers last summer
remains to be seen. For the present
the cprings of new business are run
ning low, but enough is doing on
old orders to keep most of the works
employed iu part and a good propor
tion fully. Financial influences
have not hindered, and rarely has
the opening of a session of Congress
affected business so little.
Reaction in prices is not stimulate
ing, even when it means return to
health after an unwholesome advance
hut it has l>een the most prominent
feature in business for some weeks.
•Of the leading products, hides were
almost the first and the most active
in ririnji, hut h:tve now reduced 40
per cent. Wheat rose about 27 cts.
with false reports, but declined
a bout 18 cents. Cotton rose nearly
50 per. cent.., but has receded about
15 per cent., and leather rose as much
but has declined thus tar 13 per
eent. Irou rose nearly CO percent.,
but has declined from the highest
point about 10 per cent. Woolen
goods rose scarcely any, and cotton
gooda much less than cotton, and
boots and shoes much less than
leather, and these have declined
comparatively little. Each branch
hat special conditions, but where the
rise was large and due to fictitious
or temporaiy influences, much re
notion is natural. Hetail prices, as
usual, yield wore slowlv, and not in
proportion to the wholesale cost o!
commodities.
Wheat has advanced about a cent
for the week, though Western re
ceipts have been 7,014,911 bushels
against 3,727,788 last year, and
Atlaatie exports, flour included,
again exceed last year's, 2,326,093
against, 1.887.737 bushels. The best
Western estimates of the crop have
l»e«a raised again. Corn moves from
farms less freely than a year ago,
the low price hindering, but exports
wetb 1,293,774 bushels, against 178,-
818 last year. Cotton has been
weak again, declining a quarter for
the week and the January option 27
points. The quantity which has
eowe into sight, 35 per cent, loss
than last year to dai«, does not yet
indicate a yield 30 or 37 per cent,
less than last year to date, does not
yet indicate a yield 30 or 37 per
cent, smaller, as many predict,
though the recent movement is very
■lovr. Northern spinners have taken
about a third less than last year.
European manufacture feels shrink
age in exports to India and the East
and the less favorable prospect for
goods. In this country the manu
facture meets with a much reduced
demand, and prices are gradually
sinking, in the average for all grades
about 2$ per cent, frem the highest
point in October. Wo'il has been
slightly strengthened by the London
sales, but the average of quotations
by Cofctes Erothcrs is only a tenth
•fl per cent, higher. Sales continue
large, 8,463,100 lbs for the week,
of which 60 per cent, was foreign.
Manufacturers have much machinery;
idle at present, and orders thus far j
are not encouraging. Dress goods:
are in less demand, and Atlantic!
all-wool Jcashmeiß were reduced 10:
•«er cant.

Last Sunday in a little town, not.
a hundred miles from Elmira, a

W«dnMday morning, Deo. 11th,
They say the editor shot two
tame rabbits while in pursuit of game
and taking part in the grand hunt,
Saturday. Well I well ! this is out
of place, if we are to judge the keen
ness of the animals by the ground
they were covering at the time we
made the shots. Why, they were
going at the rate of a yeller dog
kicked out of the front door. We
fear somebody has made a mistake,
but under all the circumstances, we
shall not, abruptly, deny the charge.
Next week we will publish the
ofllcial announcement of the Sullivan
county teachers' institute to be held
at Dushore, December 30—Jan. 3.

lowing well known educators: Dep

The contest court convened in Im

Dunham Inform* the editor that it in
very difficult to say how much time
the attornies will consume in their
argument to the court, concerning
who shall pay the cost of the con
test—the district or the petitioners,
hence, it is impossible for the RE
PUBLICAN to give the decision ol the
court, in tbiß issue.
Dist. Atty. F. F. Drake of Wj»

arguments iu the contest case. Mr.
Drake is a warm friend of Judge
