To Work lor llnrrinoii.
New York, Nov. 22.—The Sun in
a political article yesterday on the
presidential situation, referred to the
Tioit of Hon. Charles Emory Smith
this city as follows:
"The visit of Mr. Smith primarily
was to attend the Chamber of Com
rserc dinner. He remained over a
day yesterday, and he and Gen. Har
rioon were joined by Hon. Chris.
Magee of Pittsburg. Mr. Smith rep
resents the Philadelphia end of the
anti-Quay combine, and Mr. Magee
is the shoulder hitter for the anti-
Quay folks in hi 3 town. Senator
Quay and his friends have drubbed
Mr. Smith, Mr. Magee and their
friends, but the end is not jret.
Senator Quay is opposed to the re
nomination of Gen. Harrison, and
Bone knows this better than Mr.
Smith and Mr. Magee. Mr. Smith
and Mr. Magee are for Harrison and
they will attempt to do in Pennsyl
vania what Gen. Harrison's friends
are trying to do in New York state;
that is, divide the delegation in the
interest of Harrison. There is no
mistake about this statement, as it
is made on the representation of
some of the be§t men interested in
Harrison's renomination "
How the Farmers Fare.
The statistics of the treasury de
partment shows that in tbe last year
of tbe McKinley tariff the exports of
American agricultural products
amour.ted to $371,125,299. The im
port* of foreign agricultural product,
oompeeting directly with the labors
«( American farmers, during that
pfliiod were $51,414,944.
la the first year of the Wilson
berriff, which Democratic newspapers
cwmlldently asserted -would enable
th« farmers of the United States to
conquer the"markets of the world,
oar sales of farm products abroad
fell off to $301,578,988. For these
twelve months our agricultural irn
ports increased to $107,343,523.
This means that the loss to Ameri
can ftwiners in a year of Democratic
"tariff reform" is more than $1 .'5,-
000,000 in this item alone. What
rtiey have lost by the fall in the
v!\lue of sheep aud wool, because
wool has been free, it is difficult to
mj. 15ut it is certain that the
amount runs far into the millions.
it is no wonder that the Republi
cs* majorities on November 5, were
particularly emphatic in the rural
districts of New York, Pennsylvania
Massachusetts and Ohio.
Counterfeit $5 bills, so well exc
rxlwl as to be dangerous, have made
uuir appearance in Williamsport
' iitv purport to be silver certificates.
< hie of them was presented for de
posit at the Merchants' National
J rk on Monday and was detected
Iv lie cashier. Merchants are keep
u_ a *barp lookout for them.

There is a well defined belief that
the Pennsylvania railroad h.is cor
ralled the Lehigls Valley, and that
this fact will become patent at the
ninitial election, says a Stockholder.
On this head n contemporary, un
usually veil informed, says:
"We have excellent authority to
say that the control of the Lehigh
Valley is passing, or has already
passed, into the hands of a combina
tion of gentlemen in the interest of
the Pennsylvania Railroad company.
It would not be legal for the Penn
Railroad company to hold the stock
of this company, but the friends of
the company can hold the stock and
utilize it in the interests of Pennsyl
vania. This we understand to be a
fact. The passing of the control of
this important coal property into
the coal comLiuation leaves in doubt
only one other property as to wheth
er control of it has been secured,
and that property is Reading. Bulk
of the stock is known ti be held in
Now York, but the holders of it
pive ao elite as to the real owners
Tke reeeßt stock movement has given
strong impression that Ihe control is
passing; or has passed into stronir
bands, and that certain large minoris
ty interest « are getting out of it."
Opinion ot (lie Messaitc
Washington. Dec. 3.—Amonp
Senator* and Representatives there
wax a wide difference of opinion in
regard to tbe President's message
which was presented to Congress on
Tnesdav noon. The opinions were
divided mainly on party lines. The
Republicans consider the message a
weak and colorless paper and especi
ally ori'icise the parts referr'ng to
the financial situation and our foreign
relations. The Democrats generally
take a diametrically opposite view
and eonsider the message an especial
ly str«ag one. Nevertheless sevoral
Democratle Senators and Represen
tatives do not agree with the Presi
dent ia his recommendations in re»
to the financial situation.
