IIKNRT E. FAWCETT for Sheriff.
Henry E. Faweolt the People's
candidate for the office of Sheriff of
Sullivan county, was born in Elkland
township in 1857, hence is 38 j-ears
of age. Henry obtained his educa
tion in the common schools of our
county and at the age of 21 started
out in life for himself. lie was a
farmer boy and chose this vocation
at his maturity and purchased o
small farm near the old homestead.
Henry worked early and late and it
was only a short time until the last
pavment due on the farm was can
celled. He purchased the Homestead
recently, and now owns one of the
largest and best farms in Sullivan
county. This is ample proof that
our candidate is a thorough business
man and just the fellow to 611 the
office of Sheriff satisfactory to all.
Should he be elected, the deserving
poor can depend upon it, he will not
distress them because ofhis position,
but to the contrary will help them in
their troubles. A man of this repu
tation would be most heartliy wel
comed in this office by our people.
Mr. Fawcett haß served two terms
as constable of Elkland twp. and has
made a judicious and competent
officer. He was chosen by the peo
ple of Elkland to fill this office. It
was unsolicited by him. Neithei
did he solicit the nomination of
Sheriff". He was chosen by the con
vention and there was no opposition.
When his name was first mentioned
in caucus, he declined, but was per*
suaded by voters of both political
faith to accept of the nomination,
lie is thoroughly competent to at
tend to the duties of this office and
is honest and upright in all of his
dealings. Mr. Fawcett bears the
best reputation possible among hie
neighbors and will carry almost a
solid vote in Elkland where he is
best known. This speaks volume
for our nominee.
It is alleged by some people that
most any Tom, Dick and Harry can
fill this office. This i3 true, so far
as the name is concerned, but when
the Docket, the Sheriff's Deed Book
and other office work is brought into
consideration, it requires more than
an ordinary business man to fill the
bill.
We can, unhesitatingly reccom
mend Mr. Fawcett equal to all bus
iness matters pertaining to the
Sheriff's office and should the pco
pic elect him Sheriff he will execute
all business left in his care with neat
ness and dispatch.
Remember he is a farmer boy and
worthy of your support.
W. J. LAWKKNCE, for I'rothonotary &c.
Wm J. Lawrence or Will Law
rence as he is usually called is a Sul
livan county boy in the strictest
sense of the word. His grandfather
(Wm. Lawrence) was one of the first
settlers in this county removing from
Northumberland county when he was
a young man and buying a farm in
Cheiry twp. in the year 1825. Win
Lawrence took an active part in the
organ'zation of Sullivan county and
was one of the three Commissioners
first elected. John H. Lawrence
was 1 0 ,- non his father's farm in this
county in 1833 his life has all bee.i
spent in Sullivan county, by occupa
tion—a farmer, he has also been for
many years a Justice of the Peace
and was Sheriff of the county from
1867 to '7O. W. J. Lawrence is the
oldest son of John 11. Lawrence and
his wife who was before marriago
Miss Hannah Dieffenbach. William
was born Feby, 27, '57 at Dushore.
He was educated in the common i
schools of Sullivan county and at
the age of 17 begin life as a school t
teacher which occupation lie follow- I
ed for nearly six years. When 21 i
he went to Wilkesßarre, Pa. and for i
several years worked in the coal i
mines during the winter and at the <
carpenters trade during the summer !
thoroughly acquiring the trade of a |
carpenter in Wilßesltarre, Milton, ]
Cheater and Philadelphia, he return- |
led to Sullivan county anil engaged
in Luminous as a carpenter and build*
or in association with liin brother
; Charles T, Lawrence. Among the
prominent buildings in this county
wliieh Lawrence U-o*. have erected
we may mention, Hotel Eagles Mere,
Catholic church at Overton, Episco
pal church nt Lnportc the Catholic
chinch at Wilmot and Laporte the
Court House at Troy nnd Laporte
and they are now finishing the hand
some church and parsonage at Ber
nice and the residence of Geo. 11,
Welles at Wyalusing.
Mr. Lawrence has been a school
director in Dushore lioro. for a num
ber ot years and is a director of the
First Nat. Bank of Dushore, He
was the candidate of the Republican
party for sheriff in 'B9 against the
well known and popular ex-Sherifl
John Ulz and made a brilliant fight
though defeated.
Mr. Lawrence is one of the best
business men of the countj', well
known and well liked, he is a man of
the highest honor, careful in making
engagements, but when made he car
ries them out to the letter. lie has a
pleasant word for all, attends strictly
to his own affairs and is careful and
sober in his habits. In a life of hard
work he has made the reputation of
heing true to his iriends, honest iu
his dealings and ready at all times to
lend a helping hand to his fellows.
Recognizing this as true, the Re
publicans have nominated him as
iheir candidate for the office of Pro
thonotary Register and Recorder at
iheir convention held in Dushore
September 3, 189*). For this office
he has excellent qualifications in his
thorough education, his long famil
iarit.y with business which has
brought him into contact with the
Prothonotary's office, and more than
all by his thorough honesty and re
liability if elected, it will be an honor
worthily bestowed and the people of
the county will have a kind, courte
ous, honest and efficient officer.
