Claims arc made that the Popu lists have carried Texas with several Congressmen, but this is denied by the Democratic State chairman, and it will be safe to accept the denial tintil the returns are complete. There may be another t'ongressman or two to the credit of the Populists in Nor th Carolina when the votes are all canvassed, but returns from that State are slow and uncertain. At any rate tho Republican majority in the next House is overwhelming. * i Q4ih T\'' 53d | C'OKORESS. CoNGHESS. STATES. X7T7l~nr I : 3 ! E : ei: d ' Si c. 6. It shows that free trade •hffell have no abiding place on the domain over which the old eaale ■[■ reads its wings or where old glory proudly floats. Several times in the history of the country has free trade been experi mented and aa often came to a dis mal determination. The present instance should be a lesson of such force that the Democratic party will conclude to abandon the fallacy and turn its attention to more American ideas and to the education of states men instead of designing; politicians. Never In the history of the nation lias a political party received a crush ing a defeat or any administration «o terible a rebuke. Mr. Cleveland was implored bv prudent men through speeches and the conservative press throughout the country to discourage tariff agi tation and above all to desist from bis free trade tendencies for the sake of maintaining confidence amonsr bnaincas houses and men of the country.
