Brook lyx, Sept. 17. —The em
ployees of the American Cordage
Manufacturing Company, at the foot
of Noble Stieet. Greenpoint, have
received the following notice:—
The Government of the United
States having removed the duty on
bagging, it can now be imported
free. Bagging is manufactured in
India, Germany and Scotland.
Wages in these countries are as
follows: For weavers, spinners and
men laborers, ten cents per day in
Ir.dia; thirty cents per day in
Germany; forty-five cents per day
in Scotland; and other classes in
proportion.
In spite of these very low wages
paid in other countries, the company
hopes that it may be found possible
to continue the business here.
Inquiry is now being made as to the
cost of landing bagging here from
other countries and on the informa
tion obtained the management will
determine what course to pursue. It
is with much sorrow that the em
ployees are notified that under the
best conditions that are hoped for it
will not be possible to continue to
pay the present scale of wages.
By about .November 1 it will be
decided whether the mill can be run
at all and if so at what rate of pay
for each class of employees. Mean
time the present rate of wages will
continue to be paid. The managers
of the company appreciate the good
work lately given by all the em
ployees and while thanking each one
now wish to remind them that it is
only by extra effort and increased
production that the mill can possibly
be kept going. The miil employs
about 700 hands.
The sugar planters in Louisiana
are a little late in declaring for a
protective tariff. But better late
thaji never. If their representatives
in Congress had not been willing to
vole for free trade for every other
industry while expecting the Demo
crats to protect sugar the taiiff bill
would never have passed the Sen
ate and the sugar industry would
not be threatened with extinguish
ment, to say nothing of the loss this
year of bounty already earned. 'J'he
sugar planters got a dose of the
medicine they were willing to force
down the throats of the farmers an 1
manufacturers of the North. If they
have at last come to realize the folly
of their selfish course the Republi
can party welcome their aid.

The Democratic Congressional Con
ference of this district re-assembled
at Danville on Sept. 10th pursuant to
adjournment president G. W. Miles
of Montour presiding, all the con
ferees present as tollows—Columbia,
Robert Mcllenry and J. G. Freeze;
Montour—G. \V. Miles and Alex
Billmeyer; Nortlninibei land—Voris
Auten and J. N. McDevitt;Sullivan-
A. L. Smith and J. W. Flynn.
After the 37th ballot Mr. Mc-
Devitt presented some petitions from
Citizens of Northumberland county
asking for the nomination of Cbas.
T. Steck, and on the next three bal
lots Mr. Steck received the votes of
Messrs McDevitt and Auten, after
the 41st ballot the Conference ad
journed until Tuesday at 0 o'clock
a. m. At which time it reconvened
and during the day the GOth ballot
was reached. Mr. Buckalew receiv
ing the votes of Columbia and Sulli
van constantly. Steinbach the
Montour vote. And Dewart the
Northumberland vote, with occasion
al variations on the last two. After
the 60th ballot they adjourned until
8 o'clock in the evening, at which
time the candidates appeared before I
the conference and severelly formal- \
ly released their Conferees from their
insti uetions. The conference then
adjourned until 8 o'clock Wednes
day morning. on re assembling at
that hour balloting was resumed j
with varrying results until the 70th
ballot, when Mr. Buckalew received
the votes of Columbia, .Viontour and
Sullivan counties and was declared
by the President to be the Nominee.

rooms the conference adjourned. \

The revival services in this town
are being largely attended and great
interest is being taken in the meet
ing by all.
Rev. J. 11. Maice the blind Evan
gelist is a deservedly popular,
eloquent and earnest speaker and is
very much liked.
The Lyon Lumber Co. have pur
chased the stock of lumber belong
ing to Bennett it Peale and the K.
M. It l{. Co, are hauling it to this
place, where it will be piied and
shipped as fast as possible. It is
supposed to take thirty days to haul
the lumber down.
T. A Richart was badly stung by
bees yesterday ntternoon and was
very sick last night, but is better to
day we are jjlad to hear.
Magargel Bros, have had put down
a fine llag stone walk iu front of
their store which makes a fine im
provement. .Mr. Billingboz laid the
walk of stone from the Sonestown
quarry. Mr. B. is getting out some
line stone.
Some of our hunters bring in some
squirrel now. They are not very
plenty this season.

Brcckinridge, of scandal fame, has
been turned down by the people of
his district, and will not go buck to
Congress. Ilis defeat was accom
plished after the hottest political
contest thiit ever cccured in Ken
tucky, re-<ulting in a complete vic
tory for Owens.
Colonel Breckinridge expresses
himself as being willing to submit to
the decision of his party. He says
he will support the nominee and will
advise all his friends to do the same.
He says lie has always been a Demo
crat and says he intends to remain
one. He says he will stay here in
Kentucky anil make this his home i
defeated, A close friend of Colonel
Breckinridge said that he would take
a trip to Europe.
Prayer meetings and fights were
prominent features of an exciting
daj*. In this city several of the
former were held and in several
places riots between the factions
injuring several of the participants.
