The Wheeler Hros. show which
exhibited at Laporte 011 Saturday,
is a complete humbug from start to
finish. The concert is vulgar, aud
those of our ladies who remained to
witness it, were not long making up
their niiud to this fact and left the
tent iu disgust.
President \V ilhtirof the 1,. V R R
says lhatthe"car»hopsofthe L. V. will
not be removed froiu llazeltoii, Say re
and other places to one town aud goes
onto say that their road has not
discriminated against any town and
will not. It has been the policy of the
| couip.iuy to tielp towns and to scatter
j its work as against the ordinary
railroad policy concentration " This
; shows a right spirit aud officials of
1 other railroads would do well to
1 follow Mr. Wilbur'* example.
The crazy people of Ohio, are
going to nonllnate Jacob S. Coxey,

place during this administration.
Don't burn boxes in the street
that have been put together with
wire nails. These nails are very
sharp and are liable to cripple horses.
We have learned of several instances
where these animals have been in
jured in this way.
The REPUBLICAN was first to give
the news that trains would run from
Williamsport to Towanda over the
W. & N. B. and L. V. roads. Our To
wanda exchanges contradicted our
statement and said it was not correct.
They knew not whereof they spoke.
An exchange propounds the fol
lowing question: "If Bob Ingersol
insists that there's no hell, will he
please state what becomes of a man
who takes a paper three or four
years without paying for it, and
then tells the postmaster to inform
the publisher that he don't want it.
The officials of the W. <fc N. B. R
R., contemplates erecting a wind
lass on each of the several trestles
along their road. The object will
be to carry water on the structurers
in case of fire. Eugene Tripp who
has the trestles in charge will do
the work and will commence the
same this Monday.
Rev. T. D. Talmage's large and
beautiful church iu Brooklyn to
gether with a large hotel, were dis
troyed by fire on Sunday afternoon.
Loss something over one million of
dollars. This beautiful edifice has
been built and distroyed three times
by fire. Dr. Talmage witnessed it
go down with tears in his eyes.
C. W. Waddrop of Hughesville,
was doing business in Laporte, Mon
day. While at the depot ho ex
pressed a desire to have his Lake
Mokoma lot cleared and inquired
for a good man to take charge of
the work. The fine appearance of
Hon. Russel Karns' lot, opposite
the depot, called his attention to the
matter.
There are fifteen counties in the
State which have no representatives
in the departments of the State
government in Harriaburg, either
as oliicials or employes. These
counties are Adams, Bradford,
Cameron, Columbia, Elk, Forest,
Northampton, Perry, Potter, Snyder,
Somerset, Sullivan, Venango, War
ren and Wayne.—Ex.
George Sanders' saw mill in
Shrewsbury twp., and run under
the superintendency of Aaron Foust,
with twenty thousand feet or more
of lumber burned early Tuesday
morning. The fire is supposed to
have originated from a spark from
the smoko stack. The loss is quite
large. George is a hard working
young man and will have the sym
pathy of nil in this his misfortune.
Wheeler Bros, proprietors of the
show that exhibited iti town on
Saturday and another member of
the little band, who claimed to own
a third interest in the humbug,
quarreled at Laporte on Sunday and
the result was, the thing divided.
The proprietors went to Dushore
and the other fellow went to Pu-
Bois to start a ten cent show. It
won't take many divides to cause
this thing to fall.
The County Commissioners have
decided to run the sewerage pipes

Mr. E. A. Herring of Old Virginia
State and who was employed by
Gaynor, Son & Co. contractors, as
chief engineer along the line of the
W. & N. ]}. last summer, spent the
early part of this week with friends
in Laporte. Mr. Herring is interested
in the mining business in Va. and
came up to purchase some of the
tools used in grading the YV. & N.
B R. R. and formerly owned by
Gaynor, Son it (Jo., but now in the
hands of tr us Lues— Dunham and Mc-
Farlane.
Herman A. Knipe of Hughes
ville and Peter liisel of Williams
port, will be the conductors on the
through trains over the \V. & N. 13.
and State Line <fc Sullivan roads.
The engineers will be Sam Allen of
ilughesville and John Faust of To
wanda. Allen has served a good
many 3'ears in the railroad service.
He served with the Heading Road
for over fifteen years and quit be
cause his health would not permit
him to make the long runs required
on that road. Faust is an old L. \ r .
employe and is spoken of as a trust
worthy and competent engineer.
The dwelling of A, G. Little near
Forksville, with all of its contents,
was burned to the ground on Tues
day nocn. The heavy gale of wind
cairied the sparks some distance
from the house and ignited a large
wagon shed, granery and other out
building, which were also consumed
in the blaze. The fire originated
from a defective flue. Loss about
SI,OOO. Air. Little's father and
mother who are advanced in old age
and who resided in the same dwell
ing, are also made homeless by the
destructive fire. We are not pre
pared to say whether or r.ot there
was any insurance on the buildings.
We sincerely hope there was.
Ambrose Farrell of Lopez, made
Laporte a call on Tuesday. Amby
drove a dandy turn-out. He went
on down the lino. Guess lie was
looking up his political friends,
Mr. Farrell and Mr. Streby arc
looking for honors at the hands of
the Sullivan County Democracy.
Both are dead stuck ongoing down
to Harrisburg this winter to help
make laws, but we fear either will
be doomed to disappointment. The
independent voters of Sullivan
county propose that 15. W. Jennings
Esq., of Lopez, shall look after our
welfare in Harrisburg this winter.
So gentlemen you will please step
down and out.
Pursuant to call, a number of our
citizens met at Spencer s store in
Laporte on Saturday and consum
mated the recently talked of organi
zation to hire the services of a
boy to keep our cattle off the rail
road track at aud near Lake Moko
ma. Hon. Russel Karns was made
president of the organization, It. A.
Conklin. secretary and Walter
Spencer treasurer. The salary to
be paid the boy per month is §IO.OO.
l'ho number of cattle assessed is 28,
hence will be about 36c per head a
month. The assessment should be
paid the treasurer as soon as con
venient that the boy can have his
money on demand.
J, W. Ballard the Laporte car'
riage and wagon maker, is doing
quite an extensive business. It is
our opinion that he turns out more
wagons than any like firm in the
county. During the last week be
has turned out and disposed of the
following wagons: One lumber
wagon to Wm. Saulsbury, of Lopez;
one light lumber wagon to Manual
Jacobs, of Unityville ; one buggy to
A. A. Baker, Laporte, and one buggy
to Conrad Kraus the butcher. He
has orders for three more lumber
wagons, one buggy and one plat
form wagon. The work turned out
at the BuJlard shops is pronounced
extra good and for this reason he is
working up a very satisfactory trade.
As will lie noticed elsewhere in
these columns, a pie-nic is billed
for Laporte on the 15th of August.
Our people will spate no pains or
expense in making this the most en
joyable like event ever given in
Sullivan county. A largo aud well
made dancing platform will be erect,
ed at Lake Mokoma, the steam
boat now under construction will af
ford a pleasant outiug on the lake,
the row boats will be let lose and a
general program of amusements will
be the order of the day. We hop«
to liavo excursions from both
Williaiasport and Towanda. Du
shore has boasted of having big
days ou similar events, but we think
we are sale in saying that their
' largest day ou an occasion like this,
would hardly make n drop in the
bucket compared with our future
, day. Come o\ er and see. The pro
tits of the pio nio will be expended
j toward the erection of a Catholic
; church in Laixirte, and this is why
the people of l.a|M»rte are going tc
take a willing and pushing baud it
1 the success yl the vut«it«iuiueut.
