The great political battle lins been fought and the balance has tipped ami knocked the soup-house democracy overboard and they are now trying to catch at straws to keep from drowning, but it is too late they are past recovery. The 100,000 majority for Grow so torments them tliat their cry is remorse, remorse, remorse, tliey have sinned away their day of grace, their hope is gone and they are already damned and Cleveland hassneaked into Albemarle Sound to keep out of the way of this heavy commanding in Pennsylvania and is not looking after the killed and wounded under his command, Col. Win, W. Jennings who died at Harrisbnrg last week, had the fortune to render to Pennsylvania at the time of Lee's invasion when the Col. was not yet twenty-five years old, an important service which reflected great credit upon his own courage, intelligence and soldier ly skill which should cause him to be long remembered in tbis common wealth and which at the same time furnished Pennsylvania with the most effective reply possible to the cities of other states who declared Pennsylvania was doing nothing to protect herself from the rebel inva sion. In the same way the veteran has been disposed to think lightly of the servises of the militia. Col. Jenning's Twenty-sixth Pennsylva nia Emergency regiment, however, was not a militia regiment, it was sworn into the United States service for an indefinite period which might prove to be longer than a three years enlistment. A week before the bat tie ol Gettysburg Col. Jennings reg ment was sent to Gettysburg to op pose the advance of Lee's army. Col. Jennings with his regiment was alone skirmishing with and delaying Gen. Early's entire division as Gen. Early has himself declared none but a courageous soldier would have succeeded in doing what Col. Jen nings did. None but a skillful, ener getic one would have saved bis lit tle command from capture by march ing fifty-four out. of sixty hours. Your correspondent was fortunate enough to be a member of the i'wertysixth, together with John li. Stevens and George Banly of Eagles Mere, and Jacob Lorah of Soncstown. 1 write this sketch for the information of the members re siding in Sullivan county, for there were a number in the regiment from the western part of the county, for they all loved Col. Jennings and all will mourn on account of his death. I). The name of C, K. JacUsou appears [ quite frequently in the Court Pro ceedings of late. He is a J. P. at | Bernice and is quoted a genuine j bungler and still he would like to be i Prothonotary of Sullivan county, j Gosh, what a mess he would make of the records.
