THE REPUBLICAN W. M. CHENEY. - - - - Editor. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1894. Entered at the Post Office Lal'orte, Pa. as second class mail matter. Grow is Eleolei by 1501)00 Majoritjf. The verdict of this state as ex pressed at the polls on Tuesday is a glorious verdict against the Wilson bill. No free trade for old Pennsyl vania. The people of this state are intelligent and know what is best for their own interest. The oue hun dred and fifty thousand majority for Grow is a fearful rebuke of the do ings in this Democratic Congress. Democracy has no place in the old Keystone state. When Blatherskite of the Dusbore Jieview states that the expenses of the county for 1893 were $18,128 he takes the footings of the columns in the statement without regarding the items which make it up. Any busi ness man who looks at the items will see that the expenses of the county vas less than $18,123. lu the first place the item of sl,- 500 "borrowed money" does not belong to the expense account. This money was used to pay expen ses which are also in the expense account. It was borrowed to enable the Commissioners to mike the first payment to Lawrence Bros., and to pay the architects. Those items be ing in the expense account, it doubles the amouut to charge the borrowed money to same account. The borrow ed money properly belongs in the statement of the financial condition of the couniy. In the second place, the item of $1312,76 "personal tax'' paid to the slate, is not an expense account, that is state tax collected for the state and paid over to the state. In the third place, three grand juries each composed of 24 intelligent tax pa3 - ers from all parts of the county acting under oath after examining'the old courthouse re ported it dangerous, and recommend ed the erection of a new one. At September term of court 1893 the Court approved their finding and made tho order for the erection of a new building. If the Commissioners had then failed to comply with the order of the Court they would have been indicted at December term. They performed their duty. The old courthouse was removed, and aircihiects were invited to compete in plans for a new one. They adver tised for proposals to build and accepted the lowest bidders and awarded the contract to Lawrence Bros. With the old xjourt house down ; the Commissioners were compelled to provide a place for holding courts and the safe keeping of prisoners. This necessity caused the following items of expenses found in the county statement, viz : Jail expenses including cost of 2 Cages. $ 357 40 Removing old courthouse. 33S 43 ! Blatherskite dislikes the REPUBLI CAN and thats all right, but why is lie so unjust to D. W. Scanlin and S. K. Mcßride? The reason is ap parent, they gave the Gazette more of the county printing than they did the Jteviexo. A penny going into the pocket of Streby looks as large as a cart wheel to Newell. 11 is at tacts on Scanlin and Mcßride will not injure them. Ask any man in Dusliore or Cherry how Mr. Scanlin stands as an hone9t man and a good citizen atid the answer will be, he stands among the best. The same will be said of S. K. Mcßride. The friends of these gentlemen should resent the attack by discon tinuing the Review, MEET IMG OF THE REPUBLI CAN COUXTV COMMITTEE, lIfOADQUAItTEItg OF THE ) REPUBLICAN STANDING COMMITTEE >• KOU THE COUNTY OP SULLIVAN. ) LA PORTE, Pa., Feb. 20, 1894. Feb. 18.—County Chairman Kane, who was away yes terday, was seen to-day in reference to the alleged agreement upon the part of William M. Singerly for the renomination of Senator Markley. Chairman Kane said : "It is not the business of the Democratic organ ization in this county to make or dictate nominations. Its duty is to elect candidates after they have been nominated by Democratic voters in popular conventions. Whether Sen ator Markley will be renominated or not rests with the next County Nom inating Convention, I cannot say that he will or will not be nominated nor can any other Democrat in the county or out side of it guarantee his nomination." Mr. Singcrly's proposition with regard to Senator Markley created a great deal of talk among the rank and tile ar.d as a rule they say they would not abide by it. Ex-Representative Charles I. Mak er stated this morning that he had been entirely ignored in the "peace making'' and he wished it distinctly undeistood that lie expects to get the nomination for State Senator, and added, referring to Peacemaker Singerly,s overtures, "If an arrange ment of that kind can be carried out then 1 think that no moro conven - tious need be held by the Democrat ic party in this county. D Mr. Sing erly makes tho nomination there is no further use for such gatherings'' Bear in mind tho lecture to be given in the M. K. church Friday evening March 2d, by Hon.
