The ladies of Laporte are filling a
box with clothes to send to the poor
and suffering in the cities. All per
sons desirous of helping in this
worthy cause can send their contri
butions to the house of E. M. Dun
ham, any time this week. Almost

It would be advisable of our coun
ty chairman to call a meeting of tlie
standing committee and fix upon a
date for the Republican convention.
The purpose oft Lei convention would
be to select a delegate to the state
convention which will convene in
Harrisburg on the 23d day of May.
We think it would also be advisable
at this time to select our conferees
to assist in placing in nomination a
candidate for President Jiulge of
this judicial district.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Eves, aged
82 and 84 years, of Muncy, were
found dead in their chamber on
Tuesday morning of last week. I oal
gas is supposed to have been the
cause of their death. Our readers
should be cautioned by this and see
that the draughts on their coal stoves
are properly turned before going to
I bed. Give it plenty of draught to
I carry the deadly stud up the chim
ney. You might better build a new
fire in the morning rather than lose
by death a member of your family or
pay a doctor bill of the value of sev
eral tons of coal.
We publish elsewhere in todays

WHEELING, Feb. B.—Pitthburg
and Wheeling parties are determined
to secure the Corbett-Jackson fight,
if possible, for this city, and the
movement is taking a business-like
shape. No definite steps will be
taicen until thoße who are interested
are assured that no such monkey
business is possible as that which
proceeded the Corbett-Mitchell fight
at Jacksonville, To this end the
best criminal lawyers have been re
quested to give an opinion as to the
legality of a glove contest in West
Virginia. If the matter is gone into
it will be well-known business men.

The old smoke-house method of
prepairing meat for preservation is a
back number in this age of progress,
and should be relegated to the rear
to join the old-fathioned fire-place,: 1
and bake-kettle that formerly adorn
ed every farmer's kitchen. A more
desirable method of preserving meat
is with Krauser's Liquid Extract of
Smoke, by which the meat can be
more conveniently smoked, at much
less expense and trouble, and which
is a certain preservative as well as a
protection from insects. The meat
can be hung in the garret aud after s
the liquid smoke is applied, can be
left hung there until used. Thus all
danger from loss is obviated, with
the advantage of better cured meat
having a flavor far superior to the]
old method. We have used the Ex
tract of Smoke for several years, are
using it now and find it far prefera
ble to the old smoke-house method.
