He Will Try to Kill the M'ilsoii
Bill.
PITTSBUKG, Feb. 4,-Senator Quay
arrived at his home in Beaver last
evening. His health is again pre
carious, He will, however, return
to Washington to-morrow.
Senator Quay's proposed amend
ments to the tariff measure have
caused considerable talk throughout
the country. The local Populists in
particular are pleased. The Senator
hopes by tacking on the free coinage
of silver, the repeal of the state bank
tax and providing for the purchase
of 154,125 ounces of gold per month
and the issue of notes therefore will
cause such dissensions in the Demo
cratic party that the Wilson bill will
be defeated. When seen at his home
in Beaver, the Senator had not much
to say in explanation of his course.
He could give no assurance that his
tactics would kill the new tar it!
measure, lie said lie knew the Dem
ocratic party of old. While the
Democratic Senators would undoubt
edly make a light for specific pro
tection for their own sections, they
would likely line lip for the bill on
the final vote.
Senator Quay continued: "The
Democrats have a majority of three
I think, over the Republicans and
Populists in the Senate. \\ hcther '
this majority can be overcome or not
is a question. I introduced the \
amendments without consultation
with other Republican Senators. I
do not know what they think about;
them, and can't say whether they
will vote for the amendments or not.
My object, of course, is to defeat the
Wilson bill. This is the only way
the silver question can be revived
again this session, and it ought to
please the silver men. As for the
repeal of the state bank tax, that is
Democratic policy, and as the party
seemed to be dodging the issue, I
thought I would give it an oppor
tunity to put itself on record.
"I believe in iny gold proposition
and have advocated it for some time
but I would not press the amend
ment now. It is part of the plan to
defeat the Wilson hill also. It is
virtually the Sherman bill over again
except that gold is to he purchased
instead of silver. I lieli <:ve if (he
Sherman law had provided lor the
purchase of gold wo would not have
had the money panic last fall.
' I may add under the Pennsylva
nia banking laws our slate bank
issue of money would bo stable
enough, but I don't know how it
would be with oilier state". X ition
al bank money i- certainly better
than the state bunk issue. In Penn
sylvania the money would l>o backed
by state bonds which are as good, if
not better, than government bonds
I may sa3, too, that in a few years,
at the present rate of increase there
will be money enough in the sinking
fund to wipe out the state debt, and
yet this is being done by the Repub
lican ring."
The Senator laughed heartily over
the last remark.
