NEW YORK, Nov. 18. —In spite of denials fVom/Richafrd Cr>ker, Ed* Ward Murphy, J p ., and.other repre sentatives, Thomas G. Sbermnn still maintains the, truth of what he Baid »t the single tax banquet on Wednka* day night in regard lo pledges de manded from Mr. Cleveland b Lieutenant-Governor bhtehan. "There is no question," said Mr; Shearman to rae to-day, "that a de liberate attempt was made at the Yiotoria Hotel dinner by Lieut»-uiiut -Governor Sheeban to force Mr. Cleveland into making promises and concessions to the machine leaders which would have been very cm b.irrassing to him in his administra tion. There is no doubt such was the case.'' "But Mr. Croker and Mr. Murphy declare positively that Lieutenant- Governor Sheeban never asked any thing of the sort, and they were; both present at tie dinner." HIS SOURCE or INFORMATION. Mr. Sherman pulled at his beard nervously a moment before replying, as follows : ''lt is not to be wonder ed at that these gentlemen desire to shield their friend and get him out of the unpleasant and ridiculous in which this ex(>ose has placed him Ido not blame them, but they must not blame me either. I did not make a fool of Mr Sheehan I got my information from several independent sources, the reliability of no one oi which can be question ed." "While I was put under no bonds of secrecy regarding the facts them selves, I was made to promise that I would not divulge the names of my informants. But, see here, lam not the only person who knows that what I said in my speech is true. The editor of the Brooklyn Eagle knows it, and so, I judge, does II mat Halstead. "What I affirm is an .open secret Among leading Democratic politici ans, who have known the facts for weeks, just as I have, but did not feel at liberty to speak until the ice was brokeu by the Brooklyn Eagle. Such being the case, the denials of a hundred L'rockers and Murphy* would go for nothipg." A LETTER TO CLEVELAND. "Is it true, Mr. Sheerman. that n letter was written to Mr, Cleveland by some of the Democratic manag ers telling him thst be could not b« elected unless be would pledge him self to them to do certain thing* 112" "Certainly that is true. The let ter was written before the dinner a' the Victoria Hotel, as I know per feclly well when I addressed tin Single Tax Club, although Mural Hfttated seems to think that I did not. '' * "Mr Cleveland immediately re plied that he full}- appreciated the force of what they had stited, and would at once proceed to teuder to the Democratic Committee his res ignation, which would allow them to select someone disposed t > promise and pledge whatver t!te.v wanted, a thing which he regretted bis inability to do. Of course that letter completely floored the ma chine bosses, who had to swsll w their mortific tion and disappoint-! Stent as best tbejr could. It has moreover lieen authoritatively stated that th • comet is now approaching the earth so rapidly that within a short time it will appear in the heavens "ma n times larger than the diameter of the full moon." Biela,an Australian officer, dis covered the comet, which was named for him in 1886. Gambert, a French man, determined its period—that is, the time required to complete a revo lution ot its orbit—as six and six tentbs years. For this reason tin ftomet is also known a- Gambert's.
