Tt does not make any difference
how many times he is defeated, so
long as he lives, Cleveland will go
on being the ouly Democratic can

-W C T A DEPARTMENT
CONDUCTED MY MF.MBBRSOF THE W. C. T. A,
BOCIETT OF LAPORTE, F.\.
Compulsory Temperance Educa
tion.
From an old copy of the New
York Evangelist printed in 18S5—
the same your our Scientific Tem
perance Instruction law was p:i9Bed
—we reprint the following article,
which was no more pertinent then
than it is now :
"Hiihcrto I have been obliged to
confess my lack of faith in any radical
change in the powers that bo. Rum
is mighty, pud will prevail—as it al
ways has prevailed—so long as reck
less appetite tempts nns<rnpulous
gain to profit bv it; so long as un
scrupulous gain tempts reckless ap
petite to its own destruction —which
is most guilty, who shall say ? —so
long as men believe King Alcohol
to be a genial friend, and do not be
lieve him to be the subtle, merciless
foe that he is. The two wise men,
Solomon and Shakespeare, answer
to each other : "At the last it biteth
like a serpant and stingcth like an
adderand "O God, that men
should put an enemy in their mouths,
to steal away their brains!"—an
enemy who takes all that makes life
desirable, and make death dreadful.
The condition of one to whom na
ture has denied brains, is not so de
plorable as the condition of the vic
tim of rum, with his train of unut
terable woes.
Temperance people preach tem
perance sermons to temperance au
diences. Temperance people read
temperance writers. But they who
know rum by personal experience ol
its terrible curse, shun every written
and spokefi word that can quicken
their remorse.
One who had once been a gentle
man, stole from under the head of
his little child, dying from neg
lect, a Testament given her at a
Sunday school. It was the only
thing in her short life she had ever
orned, the only gift she had ever
received. She prized it with a child's
strong feeling, and kept it in her
miserable bed. Ilor father look it
while she was sleeping, as the only
thing left which would bring the
price of a drink for the thirst that
cannot be quenched."
Then follows an epitome of the
plan devised under Mrs. Hunt's di
rection, to secure the needed lcgis
la'ion to "save the children' from
the sin of ignorance of the nature
and effects of alcohol:
"This action seems the most hope
ful, practical attempt yet mailo4o
put information where it will do the
most good. Though slowlv, yet sure
ly, is not the liquor traffic becom
| ing year bv year less reputable ?
One dealer who has retired from
[ the wholesale business with a large
fortune, has the mortification of see
ing his name displayed on there
tail shops as an advertisement of
their stock in trade. His elegant
suburban residence is styled "Agin
court," which some divide thus:
A-Gin-Court, an appropriate name
for the residence of a destroyer of
his fellowiucn."
"Public sentiment has changed
greatly in llio Inst few years as to
the need of drink to support one's
strength. It is no longer held to
he indispensable washer-women,
liny-makers and other laborers. Let
us hope that with the enlightenment
|of the rising generation, tho dark
shadow of the curse of drink may
grow less, and drunkards become,
like angels' visits, few and far be
tween."
