Democratic Mtuinliug Committee
Meeting;
The Sullivan County Democratic
Standing Committee met at the
Court House at LaPorte, on Satur
day, pursuant to call of Chrirman ol
said committee—R. M. Stormont,
who presided o\er the gathering.
Twelve of the thirteen precincts ol
the county was represented.
Shrewsbury being the absent one.
The object of the meeting, so we
are informed was to insert a new
plank in their platform ol electing
delegates. A resolution was offered
that the people voto for their choice
of the candidates at the primaries,
thus instructing the delegatus at the
general convention, which would, as
claimed, do away with the blood and
thunder at the primary election. This
however, was r.ot favorably tho ugh 1
of by a majority and ai amend
ment was offered—"that the system
of electing delegates remain as thej
now are," which was carried by a
vote of 9to 4. The vote by pre.
cincts was as follows :

"From the present indications,"
8.13-9 the Bradford Era, "prospeot
is that hemlock will be much lower
than last year. Some dealers are of
the opinion that it will be at least a
dollar lower. Last years bark was
sold at §G a cord, tho highest figure
ever reached iu this section. The
cause of the decline is attributed to
a falling off in consumption in the
eastern market. Peabodv Mass.,
is the largest eastern bark centre,
and the consumption last 3 r ear is
said to have declined
which accounts for the stagnation
this year.'

The following extracts from an
address given by Prof. L. W. Parish
ol' the lowa State Normal School.
"Every Christian girl may and
should require total abstinence as
one of essontials to tho winning of
her love.
If this were the rule, what a reform
should we witness in Americau so
ciety,and what a heavenly brightness
there would be in the sky of many a
family where now tho dull clouds of
anxiety over hang, and even the
swift tornado fills with mortal ter
ror.
Oh, the pity that every generation
of young women has to learn for it
self and often through bitter expers
ience, the fact that a man who
will not give up a bad habit before
marriage for tho sake of her he love e
seldom does so afterwards to please
his wife or even to save his children.
Oh, that our American girls bad
alw y* the cournge to show their
uuconquerable aversion to this and
other evil habits of young men, by
d.'cliningan intimate friendship with
those who refuse to be worthy of it!
I believe that a W. C. T. U. of on
girls with this as a fudamenfal prin
ciple would work more of a reform
among our young men than is well
realized
And you young men strong and
brave, who glory in your strength
and feel confident that you have the
power to control the dangerous habit
who detest the weakness of those who
yeikl their wills to the sedujth ns of
drink, oh, young men are you strong
er and more gifted than those great
and noble souls, the Coughs, the
Wirts, the Woolleys, who in the pride
of thier 3'outh went down before this
insidious destroyer until their pride
was in the dust and their manhood
reduced to the leyel of the brute.
It is true, in weary middle life they
struggle back dgain to decency and
flinal usefulness, all black and
blasted with scenes too dreadful to
remember. Are you stronger than
they to resist, if some unforseen
temptation or discouragement addt
its unexpected influence to the so
cial glass? Or if you fall, dare you
hope like them, to rise again? Havt
you not known many a man ol
stronger will and brighter intellect
than yours, who his failed? Oh.
the anguish, the despair of that word
for those who have wrecked theii
lives. Young man the danger you
are courting is like the deadly quick
san J innocent to look at, but subtle,
cruel a'id implacable.
If yon would know the meaning
of this struggle, read the life of any
man who, by the grace of God,
has come out of it in his right mind.
Boys were never seen in drinking
places as long as whiskey was the
standard. But after lager beer was ;
introduced, the boys would goto the
saloons where games were prepared |
for them such aw bagatelle and pool
and in a little while you found druken
boys.— Chief of Police of Haltimort. '

Which of your boys, the heaven of
your heart and life.will you give in
order that your town nuiy be with j
gas or brilliant with electric light?
Which child can you spare to help
i your town grade pave its and streets:
' How long will you consent to tread on |
sidewalks that the blood of souls
has enabled y«ur town to lay for
your convenience?-- Jfur// J.AUlrirU

OUR MOTTO!
What docs it mean ?
Square Dealing.
With less it would be folly to
be content, for more than that it
is unreasonable for you to ask.
Look out for the man that says he
will give you something for
nothing, he will do no such thing.
We don't do anything of the kind,
we don't even pretend to, we will
give you as good as you can get
elsewhere for your money aud
better than you can get in most
places. We have no use for silly,
meaningless arguments. It is as
much to your interest to deal with
us as it is to ours.
New goods are constantly ar
| riving and you will be pleased
with the style and finish of the
| goods as well as the price we have
put ou them. Come iu and see
, them.
i Respectfully yours,
J. V. RETTEfiBURY,
