A Democratic llouse of Represen
tatives, with an overwhelming Ma
jority, Ims been in session for five
months aad a half, but so fur has
been unable to furnish nn ounce cf
amunition to the Democratic Presi
dential campaign magazine. There
have been committees investigating
the departments and every lead look
ing anything like a scandal has been
persistently fclowed. But nothing
has been discovered, and the only re
sult has been to lead the nosing com
mittee or tiro too ambitious individ
ual against a stone wall. Not a
woodchuck has been found although
the Democratic ptirly is out of meat
and a Presidential campaign is at
hand.
This is as encouraging a situation
to Republicans as it is discouraging
to Democrats. It s-trc lghthens the
former in just the Fame degree that
it weakens the hitter. It compels
the Republicans to defend no acts
nnd excuse no scandal?, and leaves
th,enr free to direct all their enirgies
ngaii st the Democratic position.
The Republican nitty wj a never so
well situated in this re pect as it is
new. No Administration has pre
sented itself with KO clean a record
as this one lias. The war of the re
bellion, the question of obstruction,
tho defence of a sound currency, fot
a long time prevented tho RepuMi
cans from showing tlie akill, econ
omy, and cleanliness w't'i which
they could conduct tho administra
tion iu times of peace, when eeou
©rnic questions are first in interest.
The present. Administration has giv
en the country an excellent illustra
ton of \%l at the party is able to do
in this respect.

No. 1025 ARCH STREET.
J'hiladclphia, May 4th, 1802.
I. Once more the returning spring
with its openinc flowers rcsur
rects the memory of our fallen com
rades and reminds us of the approach
of our sacred "Memorial Day." Wt
see them as they fell when morether
a quarter of a cenlurj' ago the flood
tide of death swept them from oui
side; we sec them scattered along
our march of the passing years, somt
with the dews of death not yet wiped
away and the flowers still fresb
sprinkled with the tears of loved
ones. Those of us that remain are
but few in comparison with those who
sleep beneath the ground that shall
echo with our solemn tread. Soon wt
must commit this sacred duty to
other hands; let us do it faithfully
while we can. It is timely and profit
able we should onco again repair
the graves of our fallen comrades,
and let the memory of their heroic
deeds baptise us afresh with loy
alty to their heroism and devotion to
their country.
Need I urge upon you that each
step and action on that day be so
fraught with regard for that occasion
and reverence for the departed com
rades, that we shall command the re
spect and commendation of every
citizen throughout the Nation.
Let us reverently ard tenderly
garland with Nature's purest and
most fragrant gift each mound where
sleeps our comrade, and effection
ately think of the unknown and un
marked graves of our patriot broth
ers, remembering that in this solemn
mission wo have the prayers of the
widow and, the blessing of a
grateful Republic.
ll* Arrangements will be made by
the Posts in this department the ob
scrvance cf Memorial Day, Monday
May .'?otb, 1892. Comrades arc en
joined to see that this sacred
duty is performed in a solemn and
reverent manner.
111. In localities where tlifre
i are more than one post co-operation
in the cermonies should be observed.

In our article, last week, we show
ed that the expenses of the liquor
traffic, in this county, must be about
thirteen thousand and five
hundred dollars, ($13,500) per annum
and that to pay this it requires. a
*ale of two hundred and seventy
thousand drink?* OP enough to make
twenty seven thousand men drunk.
In that computation, we omitted
to estimate the profit of the liquor
dealers. Since last week, we have
been trying to find some reliable
data, upon which to estimate these
profits without much success, but it
seems reasonable that men would
not so eagerly seek to obtain licenses,
if their profits over and above expen
see, were not equal to their expenses.
This would require that the number
of drinks should be doubled and
more men to drink.
It must also be remembered, that
this great tax paid to the liquor
sellers, is not assessed equally upon
all the men of the county, for a good
many escape it, by not drinking.
The great burden falls upon the
drinkers, the ones least able to. pay
it. Can one compute how many
comforts this great tax would bring
to hundred of families, if it was ex
pended for things needed, in making
happy homes.

Begin with small things y let not
a day pass without trying to lighten
the burden of some poor struggling
brother. Show the world by little
acts of kindness that the life we are
living is making us better men and
women. As it takes many drops of
water to make the ocean, so it take*
many acts to make a life. Begin
with little things, and as you grow
in understanding and wisdom, great
er opportunities will present them
selves. Do not forget that there are
hundreds of poor starving souh
reaching out in search of light, and
do not be afraid or ashamed to give
what you have. Remember nature
will 011I3* supply as you are capable
of receiving, and you can not be in
a position to receive until you begii.
to use what you already possess.

OUR MOT TO!
What does it mean ?
Square Dealing.
With less it would be folly to.
be content, for more than that it
is unreasonable for you to ask.
Look out for the man that says lie
will give you something for
nothing, he will do no such thina.
We don't do anything of the kind,
we don't even pretend to, we will
give you as good as you can get
elsewhere for your money and
better than you'can get in most
places. We have no use for silly,
meaningless arguments. It is as
much to your interest to doal with
us as it is to ours.
New goods are constantly ar
riving and you will be pleased
with the style and tinish of tho
goods as well as the price we have
put on them. Couie in and see
them.
Respectfully yours,
J. V. RETTENBUaY,
