John Boyd, foreman of the RE PUBLICAN, was visiting his people, at Dushore, over Sunday. A majority of our correspondents are a trifle forgetful in the way of sending us the news. W. T. Watrous of Jolinsonburg, Pa., anticipates spending the holi days with friends, at LaPorte. Our time table of the W k N. R. railroad has recently Wen changed, and is correct to the minute. The Finch homestead, on Muncy St., is being re-shingled and a new sidewalk layed along the premises. We are told that there will be a total eclipse of the sun in April, 1893—just after Blaine's inaugura tion. A Mr. Fritz killed a very large black bear, on the mountain, near Jamison City, the early part of last week. \trs. E. V. Ingham of; the 'Mere, who liae been seriouslyj ill for the past 18 months, is improving quite noticeably. Hundreds of in the forest close about this section, was up rooted by the severe wind storm of Friday afternoon. Tunkhannoek, is in mourning over their dilapidated railroad depot. They are in hopes of a more tidy one, in the near future. Mrs. Geo. Albert of Cherry twp.. is confined to her room with pueumonia. At this writing, how ever, she is slightly improving. We are pleased to learn that Mr. Bennett, assessor of Shrewsbury twp., has improved in health suf ficient to do the work, and is thus engaged. Mrs. J. L. Smyth ofLal'orte, who has been receiving medical treat ment at Athens, Pa., for the past ft or 6 weeks, returned home, on Thurs day la«t. Jooeph Newman, the polite and genteel express and telephone agent of the W. & N. 8., located at Nord mont, was calling on friends at La- Porte, Sunday. Ex-ffyeaker Reed received the sup- j port of the Republicans for the! Speakership, but the Gravs were too many tor the boys in Blue, hence the Georgian presides. Judge Ingham and Jacob Lorah, 1 were looking up the case—Sullivan Oounty vs. Jacob Lorah, last we£k. This case is first on the trial list and evidently will be heard at this term. John Yonkin of Cherry, aged 82 years died at his Residence of old age, on Thanksgiving Day. De ceased was ft kind old gentleman and had hosts of friends throughout the county. Miss Annie E. Ettinger, teacher of the primary school at this place, was ill Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Miss Low looked alter this department, during the iflness of Miss E. The gunning season has about come to a close and the news items that is afforded the printer from this source, will soon cease—to be filled by drowning accidents of skating parties. We can look for an ibrease of items from this source, pismuch as both sex take a hand in this passtiiue. We will record *hem all. Next week, certainly Las the ap pearance of being a very economical court, so far as Commonwealth ca*es aie concerned. It was reported that Dushore would furnish her u*ual quota of cases wherein the county would have to foot the bill, but we have learned since, that there is fair prospects of a settlement of several of those cases. It is the wish of ihe people that these settle ments may come about. The land owned by the Eagles- Mere syndicate, has, we understand been assessed at S4O. per acre. This, the people in the vicinity oT the 'Mere, think about right, and say— heretofore this property has been valued entirely to low. Property is increasing in value in nearly every section of our county, hence higher value and more taxes, to meet the increasing expenses of cur county which naturally comes by the in creasing population. The LaPorte Sunday Bchool vote 1 in favor of a Christmas tree, last Sabbath. The same to take place in the M. E. church, on Christmas night. The Christmas tree, gener ally, is observed on the Eve of Christmas, hence, this one will be a trifle latft in the day. We under stand, however, that this is caused by the announcement of the school exhibition, to take place on Christ mas Eve. According to the mancenver ofj our Sunday school last Sabbath, as given by a visitor, elsewhere in the REPUBLICAN, the onlookers must have been highly entertained. Why, lie calls it a (ilraina tending some what to tragedies, and says the solo part, was just to pleasing for any thing. This is really too bad, and it is the wish of ihe people of the community, that it may never occur again. Parents should call at Ihe public schools occasionally and see how their children are getting along. A brief call not only helps your own children, but encourages the teacher to make a greater eftoit to develop the talents of his pupils, if he sees that the parents have an interest in what he is doing. Mrs. Jackson of fjushore, visited LaPortc, on Thursday la«t. and re mained until Saturday, during which time she was ireatecf for erysipelas, by I)r. Jinks the mesmeric physician of Avon, N. Y. Br. Jinks has several patients in town and all report their condition improving. Santa Clans r.gain has his head quarters at T. J. Keeler's this year and that is undoubtedly the place to get your Christmas toys, dolls, doll carriages, hohbv horses, games, building blocks and in fact every thing to amuse the children. coynty institute has not con vened at LaPorte for some few years past, and our people thinK it unfair. Prof. Black, however, is judge and jury in the case and can select the place of convening according to his taste. De La Green, bank examiner of Muncy, spent the early part of this wfeek at LaPorte. fie came up for a litlle recreation and brought his grin along, with the expectation of bagging a bird or two. We wi-b Mr! Green lots of success. Monday the 21st will be a profi table day for the I,aPorte postmaster, as we intend addressing bills on this date to each and every one of our deliquent subscribers—and they are many. Pay your subscription, court week. Wall, the recently convicted mur derer in Wyoming county, cost the tax payers of said county S2OOO. The commonwealth cost in a murder trial, is like a mushroom, it grows rapidly. A five gallon demijohn, filled With imported whiske}', was found in a 10.006 pound whale, captured near Green Run beach, Md., on Sunday. This is turning ihe faucet on where it is leiist expected. WANTED:" —Two or more cats. Color not material. Will pay liber ally. Address : DAN MCCARTHY, LaPorte, Pa. Our ambitious young men and lady readers should address the I* well Business College, of Bing bamton, and learn bow good posi tions may be secured. Will the Court be obliged to order the Towp Council to make the need ,ed repairs on crossings about' our ' town ? Atfd why 112 The Sullivan Telephone line be tween this place and Dushore has recently been repaired and is now, o.k. Judge Bartch of U-tah, spent Thursday and part of pridry with friend" in Bloom«burg £nd vicinity. I|e looks hale and hearty as though ♦he Salt liake air agreed with him. The Judge succeeded in having the Republican National Committee recognize the new Republican party organization of the Territory. Here tofore the parties in Utah have been known ar. Mormon and Anti- Mormon, but now the voters are ranging themselves under the Re publican and Democratic banners.— Bloomsburg Republican. Judge Bartch is a brother rf Mrs. George Albert of Cherry twp. ; Sulli van count*/. —» » Crisp, of Georgia, has been elected Speaker of the Fifty-Second Con gress, after one of the most bitter factional contests on record. His choice is a signal victory for the enemies of Grover Cleveland, and the result is almost cctain to change the asptcl of the ex-President's can didacy. The fight for the Speaker ship was a fight within the lines of the Democratic party-—it Was a fight l>etween Grover Cleveland and David B Hill, and David 13. Hill has won. This result proves con clusively that Mr. Cleveland might ns well retire from the race for the nomination, because Hill controls New York, and Tammany, i'n dic tating the nomination, will give the delegation to tlie candidate of its choice. There is the out come to discourage the Republican party. j The interior ot the L.Porte Hull is being remudeied under the su pervision of the Odd Fellows. This move will hereafter prevent enter tainments from holding forth in said structure—for which the order is not complimented in the highest by the people, inasmuch us it was un derstood at the time of the erection of the building that the room should be used as a public hall and for ttiis reason a number of our people who do not wear the three links, tcoK stock, that otherwise would have : refused to invest their wealth in the structure. This, they claim, is taking unfair advantage of their : generosity. ' Newell, of the Dushore Jievietr, i ' has made another break. Here it is : The teachers institute for Sulli van county will be held at Dushore, beginning Monday, December 28. Dushore is the only town in ttie county that can properly accom modate the institute.—Dushore lie view. We do not imagine that the land lords and people of La I'orte, Sones town and Forksville, will take kind ly to this remark. Inasmuch, as e'ther of these towns have all the ac commodations necessary to look after the gatherings of a Sullivan county teachers' institute. If Newell is'nt cured of what 'ails liim soon, his subscription, will noticeably grow le>s. We have almost come to the conclusion that he shall take worm lozengers. We are alarmed about the hoy and fear it is a monster. Better take a double dose, Newell ! On Friday last a crank entered the office of feussel Sage,' a million dol lar broker, on Wall St., New York city aud requested of Sage one mil lion two hundred thousand dollars. The broker perceived at once that the man was a crank and attempted to put liitn off by saying that he did not have that amount on hand This would not sufllce the Intruder, how ever, and lie made the request again with the threat, that unless the cash is forthcoming he would blow lain (Sage) to atoms. I'be crank had a grip in hid hand and in it he said was the explosive. A short con versation took place between the million dollar broker ai>d the insane mail which was not satisfactory to the latter and down w£nt the grip with fearful results. The private secretary of Mr. Sage,E. F. Norton, was killed outright, Mr. Sage was bruised, but not serious, a brother in-law of the broker • also, received bruises about the f.tce and a clerk hud one eye put out. The head of the bomb thrower was blown otl from his body and is now on ex hibition mid attracts much'attention. The crank is supposed to be a man by the name of Wilson of SaalVun ciaco. As heretofore announced in the REPUBLICAN, we intend sending bills soon to those in arrears for the RE PUBLICAN, for ofae year or more. Those of our subscribers in attend ance on court next week, can save ■is this trouble by calling and set tling the same. Trlei.nlal Assessment, The triennial assessment is in progress this month, and ac cording to the Act of Assembly of Febiunry 14. 1889, the assessments are being made by the assessors, there heing no provisions made for any assistant assessors as has been held by many throughout this county. The office of assessor is a very im portant one, and especially when inakhtc the triennial assessment. There is a penality for assessors failing to comply with the la#, which reads as follows : "If any assessor shall knowingly and intentionally omit, neglect or refuse to assess and return any property, person or thing made taxable by law, or shall know ingly or intentionally assess rate or value the same at any more or less than lie enali know or believe the just cash value thereof, shall be sub ject to imprisonment not less than three nor more than twelve months, and fined in a sum not less thau SIOO nor more than S2OO. A New Feature in Pabbath Schools. We understand lhat a new feature has been introduced into the general exercises of the Sunday school in' the First Ward, called: Phllo tnelo-diama. by reason of its melody j :of love. We are told its pleasing 'effects keep alive happy memories. It is arranged for one or more voices. Its most pleasing effect was the solo part. The whole in its excellency as portrayed last Sabbath ; tending somewhat to tragedies, WHS almost; inimitable, pleasing to the ear and. highly refreshing to the soul, its[ edif\ing results have not yet been j fully revealed. If known before, hand, due notice will be given of its reproduction. The Christmas tree in contemplation of erection, may possibly, call forth a repetition of its excellencies.
