The statement issued by the gov
ernment bureau of statistics shows
that during the ten months ended
April 30, 1891, 401,230 immigrants
arrived in the United States, exclu
sive of arrivals from the British
North American possessions and
Mexico; and for the four months
ended April 30, 1891, 171,049. The
average daily arrival for the four
months in question was almost 1,500
or an immigrant every minute in
the twenty-four hours. There is
something wrong with our immi
grant laws or the way they are en
forced when this wholesale unload
ing of foreigners on this country is
allowed togo on month after month
and year alter year. It is safe to
say that both the law and the
methods of enforcing it are both de
cidedly defective. It is apparent to
all that the hospitality extended by
the United Statos to the people of
other countries is woefully absurd.
Vigorous and practical legislation is
needed to correct this and the soon
er it is enacted the better it will be
for the United States. That the
landing of each day of 1,500 men, of
whatsoever sort and condition, is
dangerous to our social and indus
trial peace has long since been de
monstrated. It is fair to presume
that a large proportion of this num
ber has been unsuccessful in life in
their own countries, and that they
will bo far from successful in this
country. A greater percentage of
them are ignorant, stupid or vicious
and belong to a class we can ill af
ford to welcome to our shores. They
were failures at home and they con
tinue failures here. Chicago Globe.
Ex-Congressman Owen, of Indi
ana, the newly appointed head of
the Bureau of Immigration of the
Treasury department, created by
the bill passed by the last Congress,
and of which he was the author,
ought certainly to make a good offi
cial, as he has for a long time given
his attention almost exclusively to
immigration matter; but owing to
the defective condition of our laws
on this subject it is not thought
that a great deal can be accomplish
ed at present. The new bureau can
at least gather information that will
enable Congress to intelligently
legislato on this most important
subject in the future. Everybody
is interested in shutting out the
idle, the vicious, the pauper and the
unproductive immigrants; and it is
only necessary to find a way to do
it without injury to the interest of
the honest, industrious immigrant
who wishes to enjoj' the boon of
American citizenship, to secure the
approval ot nine-tenths of our peo

SONESTO WN ITEMS.
The trainmen have come to our
town to board.
Sonestown is still moving on with
its various enterprises.
Magargle Bros, are still putting in
more goods in their store.
Samuel Boone is opening up his
store. Look out for goods now.
Alex Hess has his house under
roof and are laying floor etc., now.
Our friend Lorah lias shipped a
car load of excelsior from his fac
tory.
Wc wish our town had a barber
■ shop. Some one said Samuel Boone
i was going to shave and shear.
i We had a fino rain last week which
, did much good, and made crops
, look much better in a short time. J
Geo. W. Simmons is pushing his
( house to completion as fast as good
work can be done. He is going to
have a fine house.
' M. L. Keller of Light Street, Pa.,
and formerly the agent at the R. R.
' station at Sonestown, is in town.
Glad to see you Morris.
■ Bodine & Warn are stocking their
! store fuller than ever, and will, we
C think, sell as cheap as any. They
have a sign up "any thing U want
' and don't see, ask 4 it."
X.
I) USIIOIiE ITEMS.
i W. L. Johnson spent Sunday and |
r Monday at Lopez.
i Onr street sprinkling pumps are a
112 great convenience just now.
i Milk shake has become a popular
. drink in Dushore. Geo. Deegan
, has it.
This is what might bo called hot
weather. The thermometer register
ed 90 degrees in the shade. Mon
day afternoon.
' Posters are out announceing the
' Lutheran picnic in Cronin's grove
- July 4th. The Dushore Cornet
j Band will furnish music.
, All crops will be short in this
i section owing to the dry weather.
Especially hay and oats. Fruit will
be a fair crop except cherries.
y A cool and refreshing shower
passed over this place Tuesday,
' which will benefit crops much and
5 left the atmosphere more tolerable.
A church fair will be held in
" Garey's hall for the benefit of the
i Reformed church on Thursday, Fri
[ day and Saturday, the 25, 2G and 27
of this month.
; Work on the new Lutheran church
is progressing quite rapidly and wc
are in hopes the building will be
s completed before cold weather. It
; will be a large edifice.
' Two families moved to town last
> week; one into Ed Stcafather's
112 house near the depot and one into
Mrs. Lewis' house on Carpenter St.
P We have not learned the names nor
where thoy come from.
We arc informed that the member
ship of the Banryan Society a branch
of which was instituted at this place
a few weeks ago with about 30 mcm
s bers, has dwindled down to less
than (10). Many of the members re
fusing to pay the extra assessments
and are therefore, out all they have
paid in.
B. Meeker purchased a bicycle of
a stranger traveling through town
' Monday and made sport for the
s crowds congregated on tho street
" that evening. Meeker, however, is
* learning very fast and will soon be
-1 come an expert. This is the second
1 bicycle in town, one high wheel and
" a satety, the latter being owned by
15 Mark Scureman. The sight seers
■ are anxious for a race soon.
