Feb. 27.—Senator Ynorhees, of Indiana, passed l!;rough nere to-day on his way to H<>t Springs to take a montliV Ueltmoot for the rheumatism. In an interview he said : "Thirteen years ago I made a speech in Congress advocating the free coinage of silver. My speech was the keynote oi the campaign I made a few months later. The Democrats secured a majority of twenty-three in the Legislature and carried the State by 30,000. Six years later I made the same fight and defeated General Harrison by 40 majority in the Legislature. On that issue the people of Indiana have stood by the Democracy and constantly increased its majority in the Legislature from 23 to 09. "There is a mistaken idea that the j people of the East are opposed to it. The people of the East, the masses are for free coinage. Were I a New Yorker I could go before the people of that State, and feel confident of election on such a plat form The money bags are opposed to it, but ihey will learn that they must not stand in the way of the people." Being asked his opinion as to the eflect of Mr. Cleveland's letter on his Presidential prospects he said:— "I have the greatest respect for Mr. Cleveland, but it would be as difficult a matter to carry ludiana on a platform opposed to lree coin age of silver as it would be to carry that State or Ohio on the nullifica tion principles of Calhoun. "I have told Mr. Cleveland that he was mistaken in his views, and that there would be free coinage of silver long before and after he was dead. "I don't want to place myself in J an attitude of criticizing Mr. Cleve- | land, but the}' are principles that; are undying to me, and nothing | will swerve me from the course 1! laid out for myself long ago and to J which I have given unalterable al- i legiance. "There are plenty of good men from whom our party may choose; plenty of gcod men who are sound on all the principles and the teach ings of the Democratic party. There Is Hill, for instance ; then theie is| Governor Gray, of our State. Frequently I bear Chief Justice j Fuller spoken of, and there is Sena tor Gorman and Mr. Morrison. A hundred others could be Earned." DTJSnOJtE ITEMS. It is said the "Turn of the Tide" will visit Lopez soon. 'j H. M. Kellogg and lady, of Lopez, ! spent Sunday in town. C. 31.
