The Wind> City Gobble* tl»e World'*
Great Fair.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 24.—The de
ciding struggle between the cities
competing for the World's Fair com
menced at noon, and resulted in a
victory for Chicago. The hall of
the House was so gloomy that the
gas was lighted. The galleries were
crowded in fact packed.
Chauncey M. Depew, Mayor
Cregier, and a host of representa
tive men were to be seen in the re
served galleries. Representative
O'Neill, of Pennsylvania, opened
the proceedings by presenting John
E. Reyburn, the successor of tht
late Representative Kelley, of
Pennsylvania. Mr. Reyburn took
his place before the bar and was
sworn in by the Speaker.
The Clerk read the special order
of the House prescribing the method
of voting upon the site for the fair,
requiring some one place to'hare a
majority of the votes cast.
Mr. Blount, Georgia, wished to
know if there would be an oppor*
tunity afforded to pass upon the
question as to whether there shall be
a fair before selecting a site.
Tlie Speaker replied that under
the special this opportunity could
not be had, and directed the Clerk
to call the roll. There wa3 some
applause as the first few responses
were made, which was pramptly
chocked by the Speaker.
THE FIRST BALLOT.
The first ballot for choice of site
resulted as follows:
Chicago, 115
New York. 72

Chicago reached on this ballot
three votes more than were necessary
and thus gets the fair. The an
nouncement was applauded and the
House adjourned.
THE FINAL STRUGGLE.
On the seventh ballot a majority
would be 156, and Chicago had 154,
just two votes short. Theie was an
agony of expectations when Mason
dragged Reyburn, the new member,
forward. Ho said he wished to
change his vote from New York to
Chicago, and did so. He was greet
ed with applause, and evidently ex
pected to lead a stampede foi
Chicago, but he was disappointed
No hn<ly followed his example, and
Chicago's total stood at 155, one
less than a majority. The New York
forces were retiring in good ordei
and contested every inch of the
ground, so another roll call was
necessary. It was the eighth and
last, for Chicago achieved hei
victory, and out of the total of 301
votes received 157, three more than
a majority.
VOTE OF THE PENNSYLVANIANS.
On the eighth ballot the Penns3'l
vania members voted as follows
For Chicago: Atkinson, Bayne
