There are 75 of the 80 teachers of
the county in attendance at the In

good showing for the instructive
fraternity of Sullivan county.
The grove between the first and

David Molyneux, chairman' of the

'9O. Mr. Tallie Morgan ofScranton
will address the meeting.
The New Year's ball given by
Russol Karns, of the LaPorte Hotel,
on Wednesday night, was attended
1>3 T 30 couple. A pleasant time was
enjoyed by all. An elegant supper
was served at midnight which all
enjoyed immensely.
We are told by Dushore parties
that the hair on the heads of the
LaPorte juveniles will be as white
as snow before the completion of the
W. &. N. B. 11. R., to LaPorte.
Just how much these foresightcd
people know about this matter will
be learned later.
School marm's arrived in town by
the dozen and by the baker dozens
on Monday. Sullivan county can
boast of a good supply and a pretty
lot of lndy teachers. The gentle
men engaged in this profession in
Sullivan ure—well we never was
j much on the flatter}' so we will just
: pass them by.
j The shooting match on Tuesday
Dec. 24, at this place was well at
tended but no extraordinary shoot
ing was the result. Atty. Dunham
as usual captured three prizes and
August Buschhausen shouldered
three prizes, and went home rejoic
ing. A. A. Baker won the I8!b.
turkey.
County Superintendent, M. R
Black, is deserving of much credit
i for energies shown to make the lu
| stitutc a success. The Prof, has
j secured the assistance of four in
! structors—Prof. Cass, of Tioga
county, Prof. B. E.James of Mont
rose, Prof, llenry R. Sanford, of
Syracuse, and Prof. Dr. A. R. Home
of Allentown all of whom are ex
cellent instructors.
The party given by Mrs. M. C.
Lauer at tne Hall on Christmas
eve. was participated in by about
20 couple. The evening was very
pleasantly spent by those who joined
in the entertainment. The best of
order prevailed for which both the
Ist and 2d ward boys are entitled to
much credit. At 11:30 p. m. supper
was announced at the Mountain
House where all proceeded and en
joyed a hearty and pleasant repast.
A gentleman school teacher in at
tendance at the Institute was fear
fully frightened the other evening
while taking a promenade on our
streets. The scene took place on
the corner of King and Meylert
St's. The obsticle which caused the
fright are worn by the fair sex and
resembled a 'bustle'which laid on the
pavement and had evidently lost its
owner. The gentleman looked about
for a corpse but made no discovery.
Brother Streby of the Dushore
Gazette has recently purchased a
Campbell cylinder press Rnd now
grinds out his brains by hand. A
buck nigger is said to be the best
power to twist one of those "man
killers" with. You see the thing is
turned by a "crank" and when the
forms strikes the impression it
weighs heavy on a roan's back bone.
Streby in time will putin an engine
in which event it will be worth a
compliment.
There is much sound sense in this
statement and it will apply to many
individuals; our own town not ex
cepted. It is written by an un
known writer. "Whether you are
man or woman, never talk about
yourself unless you are asked to do
so very particularly. The large end
of a horn usually represents the
interest we take in ourselves. The
small end drawn out to a point,
represents the interest other people
take in us."
The two prisoners Dewitt and
Ezra Shultz of Bradford county,
who are confined in the county jail
at this place carelessly up-set the
stove In the cell on Tuesday morning
which at the time was red-hot. They
at once threw on water and in less
than a second the room was filled
with steam and smoke. They un
doubtedly imagined that their time
had come, judging from their moans
heard at a distance. Turn-key Thomas
entered the cell and with the as
sistance of the convicts made right
the difficulty.
The REPUBLICAN receives com
pliments dai'y for its neatness in
print and its newsy columns. We
think the REPUBLICAN is a trifle the
best paper published in the county.
Do you see anything strange about
that ?
The Christmas tree held at the M.
E. church at this place on the even
ing of Christmas in honor of the little
ones, was pleasantly enjoyed by all.
The little folks recited and sang in
chorus which was appreciated by
' parents and honored by bystanders.
After the recitations had been gone
through with the presents which
hung on the tree in large numbers
were read off and presented to the
children which seemed to be their
part of the pleasure realized in the
evening's exercises.
The lecture in honor of the teach
ers' institute to be delivered by Dr.
A. R. Home of AUentown this
Thursday evening in the Court
House is destined to be one of the
best ever listened to by our people.
Dr. Home will lecture on "Useful i
Knowledge," and will illustrate the
same by experiments. All should
attend the lecture and assist a good
cause—Price of admission 25c.
The proceeds of which will be used
to defray a part of the expenses
occured by the teachers' institute.
A full house is requested.
John Appleman of Nordmont,
who is somewhat involved fin.in
ciall}-, disappeared last week taKing
with him two match team of horses,
owned by him but were about to be
levied upon by the Sheriff. It is
said by his creditors that had he re
mained at home and allowed the
Sheriff tc on and make a levy
there would have been ample per
sonal property to have paid off all
claims and a small surplus for his
own use. This end would have
been brought about by the assist
ance of Mr. Chas. Reeder one of his
creditors. It is rumored now that
it will take his farm and all personal
property to make his creditors
good.
The people of Dushore enjoyed a
free show in Carey's Hall last week
and immediately after the per
formance was over the manager
would announce a dance—three sets
for a quarter. On Thursday night
four young ladies engaged the music
and invited four young gents of
Dushore to join in the galy occasion.!
The boys accepted the invitation.
The price for music (which was com
posed of one or two of the showman)
was agreed upon at $3. The "select"
meet in the Hall at the usual hour
for arriving at parties and enjoyed
the passtimc for several hours when
the contribution box was passed to
settle for music and Tic, realized.
Dancing ceased. We will give the
names of the participants in our
next issue.
We have it from good authority
that the W. k N. 8., will be built to
LaPorte, positively certain, during
the coining summer. It is a notice
able fact that there is considerable
stir in railroad circles about this
section and there is no reason to
doubt but that there is some truth
in the above assertion. We trustt
however, that there is more correct
ness in our statement than there was
in the report of railroad news given
by Rutter of the Iltighesoille Mail
in his issue of Dec. 20. Wherein he
says that a "large force of men are
engaged in grading fVom Nordmont
to Beraice." This is entirely untrue
and caused much laugh here when rend
in a public place on the day of the
arrival of said paper. This state
ment by Rutter, however, is just
about as near correct as he is in the
habit of informing his readers.
Hon. Charles W. Stone, Secretary
of the Commonwealth, said to a
newspaper correspondent: "You
can say that lam a candidate for
Governor." This means that Mr.
Stone is going into tbe fight with a
determination to win, and does not
want to be considered a dark horse.
At present Senatoi Delamater, Gen -
eral Hastings, Major Montooth, and
Secretary Stone are in the field. All
good men and true, staunch expon
ents of Republican principles, well
fitted for leadership, and sure to
land the party a winner next Nov.
Where is the Republican party in
any State that is so rich in material
' for gubernatorial candidates ? i
The recent epidemic which is caus
ing many deaths in the old world is
playing havoc over there. Deaths
are numbered by hundreds. In
Australia the malady prevails among
horses.
Ezra and Dewitt Shultz brothers, of
near Overton, Bradford county, were
arrested on Thursday last for burg
larizing the store of Clias Wanck of
Forks twp., Sullivan county and
were brought to LaPorte on Satur
day Dec. 28, and placed behind the
prison bars. The goods stolen
amounted to some SSO. A lively
time ensued when constable
Hunsingcr of Forks entered or at
tempted to enter tke home of the
convicts to make the arrest. He
was COH Iron ted by a revolver point
ed straight at his eye held by the
grip of the wife of one of the
Shultzs. He retired and secured
the assistance of Chauncey S. Hot
tenstein and R. W. Norton who
entered the building and arrested
the third brother Charley but at the
bearing no proof of his guilt could
be sustained and he was given his
freedom. The two brothers now in
Jail were arrested on the public ioad
while returning from Towanda, and
were brought to LaPorte by Norton
nnd llottenstcin; constable Hun
singer arguing that he was other
wise engaged.
Lincoln Edkin of Davidson twp.,
who escaped from the Sullivan coun
ty jail on Wednesday Dec. 17th, a
full account of which was given in
our last issue, is still amohg the
people of the world enjoying his
freedom. It is rumored that he is
rusticating with friends and relatives
near his home and that he has re
peatedly sayd "that the first person
who attempts to arrest him and
bring liiiu back to jail, he will inHict
upon his person wounds of serious
nature." Notwithstanding these
threats, however, we are informed
that an officer accompanied by one
assistant will appear tipon the scene
and if in their power will return the
escaped to cell No. 1,
mmm
The people of Sullivan county are
becoming tired of reading accounts
of convicts escaping from our ill
constructed jail and we have heard
it remarked by tax payers at least a
half dozen times within the past ten
days that our county should and can
afford a jail of credit to our county.
It is merely a waist of time for the
court to sentence a convict to serve
a term in prison in Sullivan county.
The first issue of the county papers
after the sentence of the court
imposed upon a criminal at Dec. T.
brought him the news that the con
vict had escaped from the prison
and was enjoying his freedom.
These statements which are frequent
are a disgrace to the residents of our
count}' and will never cease until we
have erected a jail fitted lor the pur
pose it is constructed for. The
one in use at present is four cells on
the lower floor of the Court House
building inclosed with brick and
simply a plastered ceiling over-head.
We doubt if there is a county in the
state so miserably represented by
prison bars as Sullivan county.
The Grand Jury at several terms of
court have urged that there be a jail
built worthy of the name but the
request has never been given a
thought by the proper officials.
