Athens—Mrs. George c Degroff
while coming from the Methodist
church last evening fell upon the
side walk in front of Wolcott's store
and sustained a very severe injury.
The children had been allding upon
the walk and it was very Icy and Es
slippery and asithough Mr. Degroff ’
had her arm she slipped from his |g
grasp and fell with great force. She
was taken up unconscious and re-
moved to her home on Elmira street) i
and a doclor was calied. She remain-
ed unconscious over two hours and | 8

funeral of their mother, Mrs. Dennis

George E. Vail returned from Bal-
timore today. Mrs Vall will remain
with her daughter at that place some

George N. Tidd returned from a
western (rip Saturday and stopped oft
at Athens Saturday to visit his wife
and child, resuming his journey to
Philadelphia today
Rev. W. E. Daw and wife attended
the wedding of Will Spaulding and
Miss Sarah Gertrude Packer at the
home of -Hon. Louis Piollet in Wiss
at high noon Saturday. -
There will be a civil service exam-
ination for rural mali carriers at Ath-
ens Saturday, commencing at 10
o'clock in the morning. The place for
holding it is not yet decided but will
be announced later.
James Champion has been quite {ll
with typhoid fever but has recovered
sufliciently so that himself and wife
went to Ulster a few days ago where
her parents reside. Since arriving
there Mra. Champion has been taken
very Ili and Is not able to return
home.
Henry Hayes of Litchfield came to
Athens this forenoon and drew fifty
dollars out of the Athens National
bank and placing it In his pocket went
to the Racket store Lo make some pur-
chases and when he opened his pock-
etbook the $60 was gone. He cannot
explain how it happened but he is
sure that he Is out $60,
Samuel W. Lee was in Athens this
morning in consultation with Hon. IL.
T. Hoyt in regard to sending his
daughter Grace to the Dansville Asy-
lum. He says they will need a few
days In order to prepare the neces-
sary clothing for her, but desires that

The former amateur record of 18
12-16 for the 14.2 balk line game had
been held by Wilson P. Foss of Haver
straw, N. Y,, since 1905, but was equal
ed by Calvin Demarest last Wednesday
night In his game with Poggenbarg.
Calvin Demarest of Chicago defeated
Dr. L. IL. Mial of New York in the
ninth game of the tournament, going
out in the eleventh inning, Mial scored
177. This breaks all record averages
for 14.2 billiards

Herreshoff of the Garden City club
and C. L. Becker of Auburndale and
David Fleming, Jr, of Philadelphia
and C. B, Fownes of Pittsburg will
fight it out In the semifinals of the
annual club championship golf tour-
natent here. The featur: of the play
was a nineteen hole battle between
Herreshoff and J. D. Climo of the
Cleveland club, the last four holes of
the match being belved and Herreshoff
winning the extra hole by a slugle
stroke with medal play scores of 76
and 78
