ATHENS NEWS
New Sanitary Districts.
Athens—So many Inquiries have been
made about the old soldier appoint-
ments soon to be made by Senator
Edmiston that we will give what in-
formation we possess. These appoint-
ments are provided for by a new
health law which groupes the differont
townships into districts and a health
officer is to be appointed to supervise
the sanitary conditions, register
deaths, quarantine contagious dis-
cases and see that the streams are
not ccntzminated. The boroughs are
already provided for and some ap-
pointments have been made in the
districts. Athens townshly aod Litch-
field are grouped together and Sayre
and Athens boroughs each received
their appointments. The pay will be
at the rate of two dollars 1 day count-
ing only the actual time on duty, and
all necessary expenses are to be pald.
Senator Edmiston is determined to
appoint old soldiers to these positiuns
exclusively.
TWO SENT TO JAIL FOR
STARVING STOCK.
Montgomery County Dairy Farmer
and Employee Gulity of Cruel
Treatment.
Charged with cruelty to his stock,
John Thomas, a farmer living near
Bridgeport, was fined $50 Wednesday
by Magistrate Lenhardt, who Imposed
the extreme penalty of the law. Fran-
cis Marohilla, who Is employed by
Thomas, was fined $10.
Complaint was made by agents of
the Women's Society for the Preven-
tion of Crueity to Animals. They
told the Magistrate that they had had
trouble with Thomas before, and re-
cently when they learned that many
of his cows were dying, they made an
Investigation. They found he had
nineteen cows and twenty pigs, which
were strving to death. Garbage col-
lected in Norristown was the only
feed given the cows or the pigs, and
the animals were 30 wretchedly
housed that they were tormented with
vermin and suffering from exposure.
The men were unable to pay their
fines at once, and while they are In
prison the soclefy will improve the
sanitary condition of the stable and
provide proper fodder for the stock.
An appeal will be made to the State
health authorities, since Thomas con-
ducts = dairy, which, It Is said, Is a
menace 0 public health,
