The company broke up after 'Ex-Postmaster and Prominent Ultiven Closed a Life of Usefulness at His Home in Sayre, After an Extended - Hues, James Nimmo Weaver, ex-postmas {ter of Bayre borough, and one of the {oldest and best known residents of ithe valley, expired last night at §:30 lo'clock at his home, corner of Elmer ‘avenue and Hayden street, after an iiliness which had its beginning near- 'Iy five years ago. The death of Mr. Weaver bas been expected for some {tme, but it was undoubtedly hasten- ‘ed by au attack of the grip which he ‘suffered about a week ago. His family consisting of his wife, oge son Desmond of Seneca Falls, and two daughters, Mrs J. S. Nevin of Jersey Shore, and Nellie of Sayre, were at the bedside when the end came, The deceased had been a resident of Sayre borough since 1880, when he came here as master mechanic of the Lehigh Valley shops which were built during that year. He has since been a prominent figure in Sayre's history, until he was forced to retire to private life about two years ago on account of ill health. He was born in Easton July 25, 1544, and received his early education in the public schools at that place. When the Civil War broke out he was then about 16 years of age. He enlisted in Co. D, 129th Pennsylvania Volunteers and served one year. Dur- ing his term of service he was cap- tured by the Rebels and sent to Lib- by prison, lu which place he was con- fined for several weeks After leav- ing the army he weat to Phillipsburg, N. 1, and entered the machine shops of an agricultural implement com- pany and served his time as a ma- chialsts’ apprentice. Shortly after completing his time as an apprentice he went to South Easton and work- ed (wo years as a journeyman ma- chinist. In 1561 Mr. Weaver located in Waverly. At that time Sayre was nol in existence but the Lehigh Val- ley had a small round house at what was theu known as “The Junction” and Mr. Weaver took charge of a small force of men employed there- in. In 1871 the Lehigh Valley offic- ials appointed him to the position of master mechanic and when the shops were built here in 1880 he mov- ed his family from Waverly to Sayre. He was appointed master mechanic of the shops, which posiiton he held until August 1st, 1888, when he was succeeded by John Hawthorne. From 1891 to 1893 Mr. Weaver was also the master mechanic of the Buffalo shops, in addition to his work at Sayre. On March 1st, 1899, he was appolnt- od postmaster of Sayre borough, and in 1903 was reappointed to the same iposition. On account of declining health he was forced to resign the position of postmaster In December, 1905, but was not relieved from duty until the following April Mr. Weaver had always been prom- 'Inently identified with the Republi: can party and after coming to Sayre {he took an active part in Sayre's mu- nicipal affairs. When the town was ‘made a borough ju 1591, he was elect- ed its first burgess, and at the end of his term was re-elected. He was also a school director at the time the ischools of the borough were being | graded. % During his term as master mechan- {lc of the shops Mr .Weaver formed {a wide acquaintance among the men, {by whom he was well liked. He was a great force in local politics and ever stood ready to advance the. inter- ests of Sayre and its citizens. Mr Weaver was a large hearted man, who numbered his friends by the score He was a member of Rural Amity Lodge, F. & A. M., a shriner, and also a member of Mallery Post, No, 285, 1G. A.
