LONDON, Jan. 15—The reported in-
tention of William Waldorf Astor, the
millionaire American of English pro
clivities, who renounced his allegiance
to the United States and has dwelt in
London siice 1599, to marry the beau
tiful Countess of Westmoreland as
soon as she obtalns a divorce from
Lord Westmoreland Is reiterated in the
British capital.
Although It Is understood that the
ear] will cousent to his wife becoming
to bride of the expatriated Awerican,
still there is no hint of scandal, and it
is asserted that the details of the sep
aration have already been arranged
Should any obstacles arise in the
course of the negotiations the unlimit
ed wealth of the descendant of the
Astors is relted ou to remove the ob
structions. It will be a uulou of July
and December, the countess being thir
ty-five, while Mr. Astor Is at the sixty
mark,
While the earl and bis wife had been
estranged for several years, they had
kept up an appearance of friendliness
for the sake of their two children.
But an incident of last summer com-
pleted the rupture and hastened the
arrangements for her marriage to Mr.
Astof. The countess appeared at a
fashionable event in London wearing
diamonds and other jewels that did
not cost a cent jess than $1,250,000.

truth.
One result of his marriage to the
countess would make Mr. Astor a
brother-in-law of Anna Robinson, for
merly a chorus girl on the stage In
this city, who is the wife of the Earl
of Rosslyn, a brother of the Countess
of Westmoreland, who, under the name
of John Erskine, filled an cugagement
as an actor In this city a few years
ago.
The Countess of Westmoreland, who
married the earl in 1802, is a sister of
the Countess of Warwick, the Duchess
of Sutherland and Lady Angela Forbes.
She Is brilliant, a splendid horsewoman
and rather advanced in ber Ideas.
Lord Westmoreland has s notable
ancestry, but he Is without money, the
combined incomes of himself and wife
amounting to but $12000 a year, He
was compelled to sell his ancestral
estate to get money to live on.
Willlam Waldorf Astor was born in
New York In 1848 He Is the eldest
son of John Jacob Astor 34 and a
great-grandson of the founder of the
Astor family on that side of the At.

Richard Donan, a widget, who farmer
ly traveled extensively with theatrical
companies, was accidentally suffocated
by illuminating gas bere. He was
found sitting in a chair, with gas es-
caping through a hose which lel from
a fixture on the wall (o a beater, It is
supposed that he accidentally loosened
the hose in his sleep.
Fog Cansed Wreck on Wabash,
CHICAGO, Jan. 16 —-Seven persons
were Injured, several seriously, when
an outbound trein on the Monon rail
road collided In au fog with a sleeper on
the rear end of a Wabash train at One
Hundred and Twelfth street at mid
night. The accident was caused by the
inability of the tralumen to discern
signals in the dense fog,

NEW ORLEANS, Jan 15 — Three
horses at long odds won at City park.
Jerry C., avinner of the first race, was
as good 8s 30 to 1 at one time and
was backed to 10 to 1 at post time
Glorifier’s win in the feature event of
the day attracted much attention be
cause of the ease with which good op-
ponents were beaten ;
Rustling Silk was the favorite in the
opening event, and with Mountain up
the “bookies” lald 8.to © against her
Jerry C, at 10 10 1, tarned up the win-
ner, and he easily oufgamed Hustling
Silk when it came to a drive. Gold
Duke turned up a clever third
Glorifier, heavily backed to win the
fourth rmce, an svent for four year-
olds and upward, over the mile and
onesixteenth course, did not disap
point his backers. The befting on this
race chiefly centered in this horse, as
he was tipped as a very sure thing.
He came home an easy winner in front
of Gold Mate, who was played as the

tional invitation court tennis match
between the four Lest players in the
world was completed on the New York
Racket and Tennis club court. Ferdl
unand Garcin, the Freuch champion, de
feated George Standing, American
champion at rackets, in two straight
sets. The score was 8-5 5-0 This
won the tournament for Garcin, who
had a record of three games won and
none lost. The other contestants

Unknown Woman Robbed.
NEW YORK, Jan. 15.—With her ears
lacerated, as If rings bad been snatch.
ed from them, and her hands cut and
bruised, a handsomely gowned woman
about twenty-seven years of age was
found unconscious in a vacant lot off
New Utfecht avenue, Brooklyn. All
around here were the footprints of men
and other evidences which made It ap
pear that she bad been assaulted and
robbed. At a hospital efforts to revive
her proved futile. She is in a serious
condition. The physicians believe the
woman was drugged before being at
tacked. There were no marks upon her
clothing by which her fdentity could be
established.

panel of the Hancock county grand
jury, which has been In session for the
past week, bave reported 839 separate
jodictmments agalnst the Standard Ol
Company of New Jersey, the Standard
O11 Company of Oblo, the Ohlo Oli com.
pany, the Buckeye Pipe Line company,
the Bolar Refinery company, the Man-
hattan Ol company, John D. Rockefel-
ler, HA H. Rogers, Wesley Tilford,
John D. Archbold, Frank Q. Barstow,
William Rockefeller and F. T. Cuth-
bert. They are formally charged with
being members of a trust for conspira
cy agninst trade.
