WASHINGTON, Dec. 1. ~The grade
{of vice admiral will be revived In the
navy If the navy department adopts
the recommendation made by Rear Ad:

says at least two vice admiralships
{ should be created for the commanders

| At an early date it is expected the
Asiatic fleet of twenty two vessels and
i the Pacific squadron of fourteen ves
sels will be merged into one Pacifie
fleet under the supreme command of
u flag officer of the highest rank, In the
same manner as the Atlantic fleet is
now organized
Rear Admiral Converse states that
owing to our responsibilities in the
Philippines and the far east generally
un adequate naval force Is neaded in
the Pacific ocean
| It is not admitted at the depart
{ment that the increase of the United
| States naval force in the Pacitic has
janything to do with the San Franclsco
| schivol incident, bot It Is no secret that
{ the administration reganls the friendly
relations of this country and Japan as
seriously imperiled by the action of the
San Francisco authorities. While the
{president is doing all he can to allay
{the trouble, reports from Tokyo say

Poor In French Hospitals.
The common people fear above
everything the hospital, says the Paris
Eclair. They are badly received and
questions are put to them in a loud
voice In the presence of patients, stu-
dents and visitors. The modesty of
women Is not respected. The poor
have the right to demand when they
are under examination the observa-
tion of the elementary laws of mod-
esty; they have also the right to de-
mand of doctors professional secrecy.
Saitfree Diet for Eplieptics.
The suppression of alimentary salt
the diet of eplleptics has a favorable
effect on eplieptic seizures, inasmuch
as It reduces their frequency and
their severity. It is of the same value
in the treatment of epllecpsy as the
strict observance of dietetic and hy-
glenic rules. Both factors combined
ald considerably in reducing and con-
trolling the seizures —N. Y. Medical
Journal.
Why Be Pessimistic?
Like an Individual, a nation cannot
expect to be healthy or happy which,
50 to speak, Is forever feeling its own
pulse and looking at its tongue In the
glass. If we cannot alter the condl-

make the best of them, and steadily
refuse to be lugubrious on thelr ac
count, charm our pessimistic medicine
man never so wisely.
Fine.

in a little cage,” he says, “and the
sulfragists will leave the house of
commons and never come back.''—

Sex Proportion in America.
The United States has a greater ex-
cess of male inhabitants than Is
found In any other country In the cly-

women.
