the Library committee, represented
by Mrs. Vine Crandall, took charge
of the program. Mrs. Thurston

In the “Echoes from

also gave a clear explanation of
Library Extension. Mrs. Bishop
entertained the ladies with an in
teresting account of her visit to a
vacation school in Pittsburg. These
schools are for the purpose of
helping the poor children of the
crowded tenement districts, Ia
these schools the library extension
committee have been able to place
many of their books. Mrs. Driggs
of Sayre followed this talk with
one of her charming solos, “Thelf
Zephyr." After intermission Rev.
A. F. von Tobel read an interesting
paper on “Library Extension”
using for its foundation the words
“Of making many books there is
no end; and much study is a
weariness of the flash,” He made
graphic comparisoa of the days of
Solomon, with their few hundred
manuscripts and the present time
with its millions of volumes, show-
ing the growth of education with
the increase of books; the multi
plication of public libraries and
their irfluence upon the nation.
The club tendered Mr. von Tobel a
nsing vote of thanks for his very
able paper. Mrs. Cary read “The
Lottery of the Public Library,”
after which Miss Bonney pleased
her hearers with the plano solo,
“Mazurka de Concert” as well a
second sclection. The club accept-
ed Captain Albertson's invitation
to inspect his library, and examine
this fine collection of books on
Thursday afternoon. Ia comnec-
tion with library extension day a
number of books were presented
to the Spaulding library, and as a
fitting close for the day the club
gave a permanent pledge of fifty
dollars annually to the same insti-
tution. The club has also furnished
for use in the coming art exhibit
for the benefit of the public schools,
the General Federation's art pro~
gram, and the art catalogue of the
Kansas Federation of Women's
Clubs.
