trial of Chester Glilette of Cortland,
sweetheart, Grace Brown, opened here
today. The circumstances surronuding
the death of the girl were mysterious,

young man and served as a clerk
in a store for a short time. After-
ward he was a partner with S. D.
Barnum in a feed store and later
was employed in the Eric freight
house at Elmira, N Y. le came
to Athens August 19'S and was a
clerk in D. E. McMahan's grocery
up to the time he was taken sick
Nov. 5, and he di¢d alter five days
illness. He was a lifelong member
of the Methodist chu-ch and an (x
empliary man having the corfi-
dence and esteem of all his neigh
bors,
He leaves two children, William
E. Smith, of Binghamton, and Mrs,
Frank L. Cole, of Athens; also one
sister, Mrs, R White of Athens.
His funeral took place from his
late residence in Athens at 12:30
[o'clock today and at the Waverly
M.E. at2p.m. Rev. Dr. Cook
of Waverly, Interment at Forrest
