The unwarranted personal attack made on the publisher of the Val- ley Record by the Sayre Times is a fair sample of the desperate straits in which the gang find themselves, And yet Mial Lilley and his cohorts are crying that he has been villified and that his char- 10 DECEIVE OTR Desperation to Secure Votes Lilley Resorts to Anoth- er Despicable Trick Mial Lilley has added another despicable trick to his futile cflorts to land once more in a seat in con- gress. Mial Lilley has added one more disgraceful act to his crooked political career. He opened the struggle with “snapping” the nomi- nation, and now he is closing the canvass with a “snap,” and joins with it a deliberate and malicious falsehood with which he expects to flagrantly deceive the voters. As may always be expected, however, Mal has been caught at the dass tardly trick, and indisputable evi- dence is at hand to show that he will resort to anything from a ‘snip"” coavention to wilful pervers sion of the truth in order to save himself from political ruin. Saturday night the employes of the Haws.-Lanna toy factory at at Towanda were handed a letter just before they quit work. The letter was addressed to them by J. C. Covington, manager and part owner of the concern, The letter requested cach employe to state whether or not he favored Mr. Kipp for congress. Mr. Covington, who is practically a stranger in Towanda, had resorted to this method of taking a straw vote among the men employed in the factory. Mial Lilley took occasion to turn the letter into a circular and ia commenting thereon utters what he knows to be a most malig- nant falsehood, and one which he With characteristic disregard for the truth Lilley in his circular says with the toy factory and that he inspired the letter for the purpose of coercing voters. These circulars were sent broadcast throughout the district yesterday by ageats in the employ of Lilley. With the assistance of his postmasters, who are owned by him body and soul, many were mailed to various points, The statement that George W, Kipp is in any way connected with the Haws-Laana factory either financially or otherwise, has not the slightest foundation. Mr. Kipp and Mr. Covington made affidavit to this eflect before a justice of the peace at Towanda yesterday. Lil. ley's assertion that Mr, Kipp is connected with the toy factory, and the capital which he is attempt ing to make cut of it, is the crown- ing point in Lilley’s career as a crooked politician. It was expected that Mial would resort to a trick to deceive the voters and the ex- pected has happened It was ex pected that he would end his cam. paign as he began, by the use of deceit, and he has fulfilled the ex- pectations. It is these methods that have brought him into diss grace and incidentally brought him face to face with defeat. The voters, however, must not be deceived. Mr. Kipp is in no wise connected with the toy factory. He has made affidavit to this fact, and also to the effect that he had nothing to do with the letter and did not know of its existence until after it had become public property. Mr. Covington has also made an affidavit that Mr, Kipp is not inter- ested, financially or otherwise, in the Towanda toy factory, Mr Covington also explains thie intent of his letter. Under oath he says it was nothing more nor less than an attempt to take a straw vote, and that the letter was not written for the purpose of coercing or in any way interfering with the man- ner in which any employe of the factory should vote. Lilley knew these facts when he originated the malicious circular which he flaunted in the face of the intelligent voter yesterday. In their desperation to bolster up a cause that is lost the gang has employed the services of brils liant legal talent to refute the states Te: Sat, eos W. Kipp is no in the Hats Jaan in its issue this evening in yelling that Kipp's bank owas a mortgage on the factory. Voters mdst not be deceived nor pay any attention to these frantic efforts on the part of the boss to extricate himself from an unpleasant hole. Bad as has been his campaign from the bes ginning its closing days has degen- erated into a tissue of unmitigated falsehoods. No one will be fooled, however, as the reputation of Lilley for truth and veracity was shattered in this place some time ago. ANOTHER CANARD PROMPTLY DENIED Statement from George W. Kipp Which Is Self-Explanatory Towanda, Pa, Nov. 5, 1906, To the voters of the Fourteenth Congressional District : The fact has been brought to my atteation that a paper is being cir- culated in Sayre in which my opponent pledges himself to work for the enactment of legislation that will reduce the hours of labor and curtail the powers of injunction in labor disputes. The statement is being made that this paper was presented to me and that I refused to sign it. This statement is absolutely false and there is no foundation whatever for its having been made. No such paper was ever presented to me. I can however assure the public that this document would receive and does receive my hearty endorsement. 1 would have signed it cheerfully had I been given the opportunity. (Signed) George W. Kipp. i — $100.00 REWARD The Valley F Record here- by offers a reward of One Hundred Dollars for infor- mat on that will lead to the arrest and conviction of any one attempting to bribe voters by an offer of money or any valuable thing that will tend to debauch the ballot box, either in Athens, Sayre or South Waverly, at the forthcoming election. MR. MASON'S SUCCESSOR Mr. Mason, the alleged labor representative, who came to Sayre the latter part of last week, for the express purpose of impeaching Samuel L. Gompers, wielded the editorial pen on the Sayre Daily Times, on Saturday, and today the Hon. L.T. Hoyt of Athens, is occupying the sanctum. The appearance of Mr. Hoyt at least assures the readers of that paper an improvement in the style of construction, and a guarantee that the King's English will not be murdered aad the mangled remains ruthlessly trampled upon. POSTOFFICE FLOODED Postmaster Bonfoey and his ef- ficient corps of clerks will breathe a sigh of relief when the election is over. During the ten days preced- ing election the local postoffice has been flooded with campaign litera- ture and the mail has not been handled with the ordinary speed. Patrons of the local office should spare their criticism, however, as the members of the force have done their best and promise more prompt service now that the unuss ually big rush is over. NR. GONPERS’ LETTER Don't fail to read the letter from Samuel Gompers printed in today's | mediate issue of The Record, The signa ture to the letter is written in ink by Mr. Gompers and the original can be seen by any one who desires to call at The Record office, The regular monthly meeting of the Business Men's Association will be held in the association Sn, Wednesday evening. UES leyites Are of a Mos: Atroc ious Character Another canard which the Lilley- ites will spring this evening is one refused to sign a paper that he for the trainmen. paper to this effect was circulated Enemies of Mr. Kipp are, however, presented to him and that he refused to sign. This statement is as false and malicious as the circular which was set afloat yesterday relative to the “ straw ” vote which was taken at the toy factory in Towanda on Saturday evening. Mr, Kipp has never seen a paper of this character and if he had, and had been asked to sign it, he would have done so cheerfully. In another column Mr. Kipp over his own signature absolutely denies that he has ever been asked to attach his name to a paper of the character mentioned above. Ans other Lilley lie is thus nailed to the Cross. FARM LABORER sult of Being Caught in Gear of a Traction Engine.
