Every Oounty Working Hard to Give
an Emery Majority.
A study of the vole for State Treas.
urer in 1905 is interesting in view of
the momentous consequences that hang
apon the result of next Tuesday's elec-
tion. From the table printed below it
will be seen that Berry carried 51 coun-
ties with a majority of 137,283, while
Plummer, the Gang legislator, reward.
ed with a nomination by Penrose for
his share in the Iniquities of the last
regular session of the legislature, could
count up only 16 with majorities of
49,023. Of this small number nearly 80
per cent, or 28804, came up from the
single county of Allegheny (Pittsburg
and Allegheny cities)
From the standpoint of the indepen-
dent voter the western part of the stats
made the poorest showing for reform.
No less than 10 of its counties, Alle-
gheny, Armstrong, Cameron, Crawford,
Fayette, Forest, Indiana, Somerset
Washington and Westmoreland, giving
majorities for Plummer, while the east.
ern and central parts of the state split
even, with only three counties each on
the machine side. These were Dela-
ware, Susquchanna and Lancaster ip
the east. and Perry, Bnyder and Union
along the Susquehanna river. Of the
16 counties that voted for Plummer,
five, Cameron, Crawford, Delaware,
Forest and Perry. gave majorities of
less than 100, and two, Armstrong and
Union, majorities of less than 200.
There is every reason to belleve that
Western Pennsylvania will make a
much getter showing this year than
last. Especially notable will be the
change In Allegheny county. With
Plitaburg in the hands of an honest and
high-minded mayor and its vast fraud.
ulent vote cut down by the personal
registration act, that county may be
expected to sweep into the reform col.
umn, just as Philadelphia did last year,
when the 60,000 fraudulent votes upon
which the Gang had been banking so
long were eliminated and the people
had a chance to give an honest expres-
sion of thelr views. Senator Emery's
great personal popularity may be ex-
pected to carry along Cameron, Craw-
ford and Forest counties, which lie =o
near his home, and the splendid fights
being made by General Koontz in Som
erset and the fusion candidates In other
southwestern counties are cutting the
Gang majorities there to pleces
Some of the majorities that will be
given to Emery next Tuesday in the
eastern counties will prove staggering

legislative career was always a warm
supporter of all measures looking to an
fraprovement in thelr conditions. I}
Schuylkill county glves him less than
10,000 majority, as against 5717 for
Berry last year, the fusion forces in
that county will be disappointed and
the five other counties of the anthracite
region, Carbon, Columbia, Lacka-
wanna, Luzerne and Northumberland,
will largely Increase the splendid ma-
jorities they gave last year
The northern and the southern tiers
of counties are alike aflame with re-
volt against the Penrose machine, and
from every quarter comes reports of In-
creased majorities for the reform cause
What a splendid showing it would be
for the independence and the mani.
neas of the voters of Pennsylvania if
avery county should cast (ts vol
against the odlous gaux of freebooters
and robbers who have so long fattened
on the money of the taxpayers. While
that is perhaps too much to hope for

be cut down to not more than six

CREASY OR YOUNG?
Capitol Commission Seliciter Or Trl
bune of the People?
Clean-cut as |s the Issue between
Lewis Emery, Jr, the life-long foe of
bossism, and Edwin S. Stuart, the easy-
going. weak-kneed figurehead of the
Penrose Machine, it is no less sharp
and distinct William T.
Creasy, the fusion candidate for auditor
general, and Robert K. Young, the
Gang nominee for the same office.
Do the voters of the state thoroughly
appreciate the fact that Mr Young
who has posed as a man of indepen
dence and whose nomination was sup-
posed to be a sop to independently In-
clined Republicans, is the solicitor of
the Capitol Commission and that all
the wicked waste of the taxpayers
money on the new capitol has been
done with his knowledge and approval!
Surely a man who can endorse the ex-
penditure of more than $13,000,000 on
this monumental job is a worthy Gang
candidate to pass upon the expenses of
the state government. The Machine
can be sure with him that everything
will go and that there will be no criti-
cal eye fixed upon the easy expenditurd
of the people's money
Of a very different type {is Mr
Creasy, whose long experience in the
legislature has made him peenliarly
well acquainted with the problems of
state finance and who is probably the
ons man in Pennsyivania best fitted
for the position of auditor general
For years he has been known as an
enemy of extravagance and an advocate
of state reforms, and it is certain that
under his administration no job will
elip through without detection and
exposure
Next to the governorship the office
of auditor general is In many respects
the most important in the state, as Iu
occupant is brought {ato close relations
with the great corporations that con
tribute to the maintenance of the stats
government, and It is of the utmosi
importance, both for the protection of
the state and of the corporations, thal
it should be filled by a man of the
highest character, It lies with the tax:
payers to decide who is the more likely
to administer this office wisely, Will
fami T. Creasy, the faithful representa.
tive and oppunent of jobbery, or Rob
ert K. Young, the solicitor of the Cap!
tol Commission, who has given his
sanction to the criminal waste of mil
lions of the people's money.
MR. ROOSEVELT
AND SENATOR KNOX
Both Want to 8ee the Penrcese Me
chine Hopelessly Beaten.
One of the amusing features of the
campaign is the astonishing alacrity
with which Senator Knox has dashed
into the fight for Stuart. After re
maining silent for two months, dur
ing which the battle has been fough!
out before the people and hopelessly
lost by the Penrose machine, the jus
for senator from Pennsylvania shows
his intense Interest in the fortunes
of the senior senator by consenting te
preside at a meeting In the closing
week and Ww speak a few perfunctory
words for the Gang ticket
It 18 no secret that President Roose
velit, whose confidence Senator Knoz
is belleved to Lave, has no regard fol
Peurose and that nothing would pleas
him better than to seo the organized
band of public plunderers, who sal
under the black flag of the Penrose
Durham McNichol aggregation, hope
lessly beaten and the decent clement
of Pennsylvania Republicans brought
promicently to the front Cerlais
Gang organs have been trying to make
it appear that the president Is terribly
alarmed over the congressional situs
tion in the stale and that he is anxious
to bring about peace. Such talk may
safely be put down as tommyrot
Everybody who knows anything aboul
President Roosevelt knows that he hag
been a fighter against bossiam for 24
years and that If he were a private
citizen of Pennsylvania today he would
be one of the staunchest supporters of
lewis Emery, Jr.
Let nobody be deceived into think
ing that Senator Knox's few words
and the visits of Secretary Shaw and
Attorney General Moody have the
faintest significance as reflecting the
views of the national adminstration
While President Roosevell's sympa
thies must, from the very nawdre of
the man, be entirely with the fusfor
ticket he is keeping strictly neutral
It is safe to say, however, that whes
the returns come In next Tuesday
night. showing the overwhelming de
feat of the Penrose machine, mobod)
