The explosion occurred on Market street between Fifth and Seventh streets, The subway was filled with people going to their dinners, and it is regarded as a miracle that the loss of life was not greater. Fourteen badly irjuied have been taken to the hospitals, and it is presumed that there is about 20 dead in the subway, which work. men are endeavoring to reach, The busiaess places in the Vicinity were badly wrecked. “JOSHUA § SINPKINS” The “Joshua “Simpkins” compa- ny with a fine brass band and splendid orchestra, will be seen at the Loomis opera house next Sat urday afternoon and evening. The play is made of fun and realism, combining the pleasing features of realistic melodrama and the ever popular rural play. The character sketches are said to be very clever while there is an abundance of good music, singing and dancing in it. Those lovable old country characters are introduced and their sayings and doings create much amusement. The company comes to us recommended as a good one throughout. The sawmill scene in the third act is said to be wonder- fully eff:ctive and realistic, a genu- ine circular saw being in motion, with Uncle Josh's son lashed toa log by the villaias una .._ "= to- ward the glittering teeth of the rapidly revolving saw, PERSONAL MENTION James Collins of Bentley Creek is visiting his sister, Mrs. George Farr. Editor Valley Record : Council have been criticised, more or less, for not hurrying up the town hall proposition. Asa mat- ter of fact, the council has dome everything in its power to have this town hall proposition brought before the voters at this November election, and the citizens should not condema the council for failing to do so, Under laws of this State no bor- ough can place before its voters a proposition to increase the indebt- edness of the borough, until affidav- its by the proper borough officers have been filed with the proper coun- ty officers, setting forth the fact that the indebtedness of the borough is already two per centum of the last assessed valuation. This, uafor tunately for the town hall proposi- tion, is not the case. The fact is that Sayre borough as far as the council is concerned is free from bonded indebtedness, while a few months since the council voted 825.000 for a City Sewer Trunk Line. These bonds have not yet been floated, and therefore the town has not yet obligated itself to pay this amount. The only thing to do now is to wait until the bodds for Sayre Borough Sewer System have been sold, and as soon theres I do not know of any one council- man that is opposed to the City Hall, but the sentiment of all of them seems to be, “Be sure you are right, then go ahead” This article is intended to stop adverse criticism, as the council cannot wilfully violate these laws.
