Born Sept. 8,t0 Mr. and Mrs, Bert Hause, of Stevenson street, a 08, Remember that every private citizen can contribute materially to the success of the big firemen's parade by appropriately decorating, A large number of Towanda citizens are making preparations to attend the firemen's conveation which is to be held here on Thurs. day. By special arrangement reserved seats will be sold to ladies for 20 ceats during the engagement of the New York Standard Stock Come pany at the Loomis this week, The Oriole football team will play a team from Owego on the Riverside grounds on Saturday afternoon of this week. Both teams are in fine practice and a great The condition of Joe Piolettwho Public to Judge Why the Record is Not Listed in Telephone Book Items of news, big or little, are always cheerfully received by The Record and as cheerfully printed. If you have friends visiting at your home, or if you are going out of town yourself, communicate with The Record and we will see that your item is i in the col- umns of the paper, If you cannot come or send to The Record of- fice, grab the telephome—the Val- ley—and communicate with us in that way. But before you tele- phone, a little explanation will be necessary. The Valley Record is oot listed in the telephone book of subscribers. Since this paper was started over a year ago there have been two telephone books pub- lished, and each time the publisher of The Record has made unsuc- cessful efforts to get the name of this paper listed therein. The first omission was looked upon as an excusable blunder, but when the name of the paper did not appear in the book issued in May last, after copy had been furnished to the telephone management, there was just cause to suspect a Sene- gambian in the wood pile. The matter was called to the attention of the local manager of the tele- phooe company. The manager interviewed the proprietor of the establishment in which the book was printed. The Record was in- formed, however, that the manager did not get much satisfaction as to how the omission occurred. Of course there may or may not have been an object in the omission, but as to that we will leave the public to be its own judge. As a matter of fact the name of this paper does not appear in the list of telephone subscribers, and while we do not attach any blame to the telephone company, this explanation is deem- ed necessary. You can telephone The Record office, however, by asking central for “Murrelle’s Printing office,” and any item that you may have will be gladly printed aad duly ap- pretiated, PLEASED BIG AUDIENCE The New York Standard Stock Company, under the management of Gaspard Brothers, opened a week's engagment at the Loomis last evening, presenting “The Slaves of the Orient,” a four-act drama, which immensely pleased a large audience. Between the acts several high class specialties were introduced including the Gaspasd Brothers in one of the best novel- ties that has been seen at the Loomis in some time. Forbes & Forbes, a clever singing duo, also made a hit as entertainers, as did A. Bernard Snow, the singing comedian. The engagement of the company promises to be a success ful one, judging from the manner in which the, initial performance was received last night. This even- ing “The Orphan's Prayer” will be the bill. FAILED TO MATERIALIZE An adjourned meeting of the bor~ ough council, which was called for last evening, failed to materialize, a quorum not being present. The meeting was called for the purpose of taking up the sewer question in so far as it pertains to the negoti- ations which are under way with the Lehigh. Borough Attorney Yocum, at a recent meeting, was instructed to ask the company for permission to go under their tracks, but as yet he has not received a reply to his communication, The status of the matter was generally understood by the members of the council and therefore only two of the members, the borough clerk and the borough attorney, showed 85 NY NGHT Clean, Wholesome Entertain- ment, Which Is Deserving of Liberal Patronage Thornton's Carnival Company, under the auspices of the Packer hose company, attracted a large crowd on the Desmond street grounds last night, and the dozen or more tented exhibitions gave excellent satisfaction. The large grounds are literally covered with attractions, none of which are of an objectionable nature, and all of which are deserving of the highest praise. Besides the paid shows there are the Ferris wheel, the ocean wave, the merry-gosround, palmists and a host of amusement stands, all of which serve to make the grounds attractive. There is an entire absence of gamblers and fakirs, and thé clean appearance of everything about the grounds indicate that the exhi- bition is in the hands of a manage- ment that believe in giving the people good, clean, wholesome ens tertainment, The Waverly Boys’ band has been engaged to furnish the music during the week. As a fair share of the receipts go to the hose com- pany, the carnival should be liber- ally patronized, SFL MUI PERSONAL MENTION Mrs. Hugh Dixon, of Cliff street, is the guest of relatives at Towanda for a few days. Mrs. Dr. Avery of New York is visiting at the home of C. H. Rath- bun on Lockhart street. Edward Keeley of Ridgebury was admitted and operated upon at the hospital this forenoon, J. L. Plumstead, who has been to Endicott, N. Y, on a business trip, returned home last night, S. A. Arnold, advance agent for Billy Wild, the well known come- dian, who has cheered the hearts of hundreds of auditors in this secs tion was in town today calling on old friends and renewing acquaint- ances. Mr. Arnold was on his way to Towanda, where the show is to appear next week. LOCAL MENTION The regular semimonthly meets ing of the Sayre Aerie of Eagles will be held Thursday evening. On account of the firemen's convention being held on that day the meeting of the Eagles will be called at 8 o'clock sharp, and it is earnestly hoped that every member will be present, The abandoned ties of the Le high Valley are sold to foundaries at the rate of two cents each. The ties originally cost 65 cents each, and private citizens living along the line of the railroad would glad- ly purchase them at a higher rate than the company receives for them, but the officials will not sell. > It is believed by many that the action of the several castern rail- roadsin reducing the rate of fare to two and one half cents per mile will ultimately result in a two-cent fare. The railroads can afford the cut, and the opinion is held that they will adopt the two-cent rate voluntarily rather to be forced to late Want ads inserted by persons not having a ledger account with The Record must be paid for when ordered printed. Under his weight the railing gave way and he tumbled over backwards, strik- ing the ground as described above.
