“Facing the Music™
the music” is a phrase derived from
the old mastering militiamen, when
every citizen soldier, often greatly em
barrassed and fearful of making an un
satisfactory figure in uniform, had to
step into his place and face the band
and its music. The more probable ex.
planation Is found in the theater,
where actors, waiting their call in the
greenroom, have to be ready to go be
fore the audience and literally “face
the music.”
Stays and - Silence.
The origin of the corset is essen
tially unaristocratic. A butcher In
the thirteenth century had a talkative
wife, who was, in addition. something
of a virago. To reduce her to silence
he imprisoned her body in the first
palr of stays. Wives have imitated

Among the laventions made by
women are copper tips for shoes, the

Waverly—The course of modern
invention is even changing the
habits of the barn yard fowl, which
were supposed to be as unalterable
as the laws of the Medes and
ORen at night a flock-of hens
may be seen out under the electric
lights in this village, busily en-
gaged in catching the bugs which
swarm around them after nightfall.
These birds have evidently dis-
covered that the bugs are to be
found there at night in large quan-
tities and are simply chagging their
habits to fit the conditiofs. It is
said by the owner of the fowls that
they get most of their living in
this manner. They take a nap in
the middie of the day and therefore
do not grow thin for want of rest.

Simple Amusement.
Amusement in the capital of Oudh,
no India, is not particularly stren-
dous. For an eastern crowd the ba
ar is the inevitable center of attrac
tion, “a free lounging place or club,
~vhera you may meet your fellows and
exchange any Ideas you may have
and any compliments you may think
fit to bestow” Bazar gossip takes
the place of newspapers, and If there
are no billiard saloons at Luckwow,
“at any shop you are allowed to play
skittles with your neighbor's char
acter.”
