NEW PACIFIC PEAK,
Veleanieo Mountain Rises 700 Feet on
Fire Inland.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 25 The treas-
ury department received a brief report
of a visit made by the officers of the
revenue cutter Perry to the peak which
recently sprang up on Fire island, one
of the Bogoslov group of the Aleutian
chain, about sixty miles west of the
town of Unalaska, Alaska
The southern end of Fire island con
sists of two long spits from a half to
three-eighths of a mile In length and
about fifteen feet above high water.
On the western spit the new voleanie
peak has sprung up, rising abruptly
from the water to a height of about 700
feet and lu shape greatly resembling
a monster beehive, with a base about
| 900 feet in diameter.
From the numerous crevices columns
of steam and sulphurous gases con-
tinvously arise and form a cloud which
| 1s visible for more than thirty miles.
{ Although the surface of the pew peak
| was warm and soft in places, the offi
cers succeeded In reaching the sum-
| mit. In recognition of the fact that
| the officers of the revenue cutter Perry
were the first persons to visit the new
| peak they have named it Perry peak.
FOR A FINER VALPARAISO.
Wrecked City Will be Rebuilt
New and Splendid Limes.
VALPARAISO; Aug. 25.—As the re
sult of the splendid courage of the peo
ple and with the cooperation of the
city government, Valparaiso will be re
bulit within a few years on fluer and
more beautiful lines than before the
disaster of Aug. 16.
The rain caused most of the people
to desert the tents which they have oc
cupled since the earthquake and return
to thelr houses. Almost all the walls
are cracked, but there was no violent
earth tremors during the night or day.
Many of the people had to walk long
distances carrying thelr bedclothes on
their shoulders,
There are no conflagrations, but the
blowing up of damaged and dangerous
structures with dynamite continues and
loud explosions are frequently heard.
Otherwise the town has assumed an
aimost normal appearance. Many buss
ness houses have been reopened.
