People Who Paid Company Two
Dollars Each for Them Were
Sorely Disappointed
While the Barnum & Bailey cir-
is a mammoth concern and the ex
hibition given was exceedingly
good, there were many, especially
among the older ones, who yearned
for the days when old Phineas T.
was at the head of the aggregation.
Baroum was an originator, those
who have followed him in the man-
agement of the colossal enterprise
are imitators.
The exhibition given here yes.
terday was for the most part made
up of “novelties” and “sensational
features” which have been seen for
years. One of the new things,
however, which fooled a small por
tion of the unsuspecting public
was the box seats. A “box” seat
in a circus is a dismal failure, and
those whe parted company with
the sum of two dollars for the privi-
lege of occupying a seat therein
were heartily disgusted The
“boxes” were located on the ground
with an iron railing around them,
On the inside were four weak-
kneed chairs which threatened to
fall to pieces every time ome
moved. The ground, which was
covered with stones about the size
of watermelons, prevented the
chairs from standing squarely on
their legs, and unless you got a
firm grip on the rungs you were
liable to fall out. From their very
location it was impossible to get a
good view of the circus. The only
redeeming feature about them was
the fact that they were not well
patronized.
HEAVY TRAFFIC
The passenger trains on the
Lehigh are taxed to their utmost
capacity these days. Today num-
ber 4 came in with eleven cars and
was drawn by two locomotives
When it left here the original 11
cars were being drawn by engine
2002, one of the best owned by the
Lehigh, and it was found neces
sary to run a second section to
accommodate the large number of
extra passengers that went out of
RAIN 15 NEEDED
This section is badly in need of
rain, particularly in the vicinity in
of Sayre. It has been nearly two
weeks since rain has fallen here to
any great extent. Showers have
passed to the north and south but
Sayre has been missed. The roads
are thick with dust and gardens
and vegetation of all kinds are
suffering. The cooler weather of
today does not give much promise
of rain,
PAID HIS TAXES
Pearley Nichols paid his taxes
this morning. They totaled the
sum of $5.69, and were for the
past three years. He didn't settle
because he wanted to do so, but
for the reason that he had been
placed under arrest by Constable
Broughm under directions from
tax Collector Plumsted, and it was
a case of settle or gotojail. He
settled.
ND DISTURBANCES
Although there was a big crowd
in Sayre nearly all day yesterday
there were no disturbances of any
kind. The police had no difficulty
in maintaining order. Pickpockets,
thimble riggers and gamblers were
conspicuous by their absence and
upon the whole circus day passed
off without any unusual incidents,

JANES McDONALD
MAY BE INSANE
His Actions Here Recently Lead
to That Belief Among Officials
James McDonal@®, a laborer, was
found lying along Lehigh avenue
last evening by Officer Lewis. Mc
Donald was almost helplessly
drunk and he was taken to the
lockup for the night. This morn-
ing he was brought up before Jus-
tice Carey for a hearing and given
short notice to get out or town.
McDonald was arrested a short
time ago, and at that time he was
trying to fix a telephone pole. He
had an axe and as he was not em-
ployed by the company he was ar-
rested. He acts queerly and is be-
lieved to be mentally unsound,

The officials of the Traction

yesterday in handling the circus
crowds. Every car owned by the
company was brought into service,
and when the people were going
to and from the circus the cars
were loaded to the limit, The
motormen and conductors were a
tired looking lot last night and
they are doubtless rejoicing that a
big.circus don’t come this way
very often.

Bic CAVEIN
A big cavein occurred on the
Lehigh Valley near Hazleton early
yesterday morning, It appears to
have been due to the floods arising
from the recent rain storms. A
large force of men were dispatched
to thie scene. Several times during
the day the cavein reopened. It
did not retard the progress of
trains,
