The Sayre members of the Vals ley Shrine Association report a most pleasant outing at Sheldrake yesterday. The dinner served at Sheldrake was of a high order, and the entire day was most pleasantly spent. The Lehigh Valley station at Church street, Hazleton, came near going up in flames on Sunday night. The baggageman and his assistant were closing up for the night when they smelled smoke, They reopened the baggage room when they found the interior ablaze, They quickly extinguished the flames, which had evidently origis nated in a coal bucket, into which Laid Over in Sayre Yards Last Night and Was Inspected by Large Crowd This Morning What is said by Lehigh Valley railroad men to be the largest loco- motive in the world laid over in the yards at this place last night. The locomotive, which certainly is a monster, was built by the Baldwin people at Philadelphia and it is now on the way to the Great Northern railway, for which it was especially built, The locomotive really consists of four engines, weighs 250 tons and is 85 feet in length from the tip of the pilot to the end of the tender. It is built for the purpose of hill climbing and drawing heavy trains. During the stay of the locomotive in the yards it was inspected by a large crowd of railroad men and inter- ested citizens. It is by far the largest engine ever seen in Sayre, —————— HOSE INSPECTOR SEVERELY INJURED Edward Pond Was Caught Be- tween the Bumpers Yesterday Afternoon and Will Probably Die Edward Pond of Cayuta street, Milltown, an air hose inspector for the Lehigh, was probably fatally injured in the yards near Milltown yesterday afternoon batween 3 and 4 o'clock, Pond was b:tween two cars when the cars came together, and he was caught between the bumpers. The insanitary condition of Desmond street was this morning called to the attention of the board of health, For over two weeks the street has not been cleaned and the refuse which has been dumped into the gutter is begining to emit a disagreeable odor. This morning a well known citizen complained to the board of health. He made his complaint in writing and it is quite likely that the board will take action at once. : The street commissioner has been absent for several days on a vacation, but it appears that no one has been left to take charge of the streets during his absence. Since the extremely hot weather began vegetation which has been thrown into the street decays rapidly, and unless something is done at once the gutter will be a fine breeding place for disease germs of all kinds and sizes.
