WASHINGTON, Aug. 20-A novel
case of smuggling at New York wns
reported to Acting Secretary of the
Treasury Reynolds. There arrived at
the New York postoflice last week a
nent package with the Brussels post

call for the package, which was to be
opened In the presence of a customs of-
ficer.

ed. The suspicions of the Inspector
were at once aroused, and, breaking
open the loaf, he found several hun-
dred dollars worth of expensive lace
wrapped In oll silk.

ists who on Satorday attempted to ns
sassinate the governor general adopted
a stratagem to induce him to leave th
palace. A few days ago a revolution

general was compelled to visit the vice

Athens—Abe : Campbell was ar-
rested at Rome this moming by
Chief Mulligan and Constable Mc-
Govern on the complaint of his
half brother, Sylvester Green, on
the charges of abduction, larceny
and fornication. About a year ago
Campbell went away with Green's
wife, taking a cow and some other
property. They were in Michigan
for some time and recently Camp-
bell returned alone. He will have
a hearing this evening béfore Jus.

Athens—Clarence Webb died at
the home of his father, Cyrus H.
Webb, in East Athens this morn-
ing at 1:30 o'clock of bright's dis-
case, aged 36 years. He was uns
married and resided with his father.
He was a carpenter by trade and
an industrious man. His funeral
will take place from the family
residedce Wednesday at 10a. m,,
Rev, Allen afficiating. Burial will
be at Tioga Point cemetery.

DETROIT, Mich, Aug, 20.—Not un-
til he had been in jail twenty-four
hours, serving a sentence passed up-
on him by a judge, was it discovered
that Dewitt C. Clark was enrolled up
on the records of the lustitution under
the name of his son. By n mistake of
the officer who had been given a war
rant for the sou the father had been
arrested. In order to save his son
from punishment Clark had permitted
himself to be locked up, had waived ar-
raignment and when brought up for
trial had entered n plea of gully. The
father will be released and a néw war-
rant Issued for the son
Ships Assembling For Naval Review,
NEW YORK: Aug. 20 —Four battle
ships, comprising the first squadron of
the Atlantic fleet, under command of
Rear Admiral Evans, arrived bere from
+ Boston and anchored off Tompkinsville,
Staten Island. They were the Maine
(Bagship), Missouri, Kentucky and
Kearsarge. The Atlantic fleet is now
assembling in these waters preparatory
to the big naval review at Oyster Bay
on Sept. 8, when the ships will be vis
ited by President Roosevelt

cent advance was recorded in the Wa
tertown cheese market on Saturday,
and the extreme prices of 8 week ago
