B-MURRELLE, Editor and Pablisher REE Published every afternoon except Sun- ays Muarvelle's Prioting Office, Sayre, n $3.00 per year; 325 cents po pe MONDAY, AUGUST 8, 1908 AND NOW TE CIRCUS _ I®has been definitely announced that the Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth is to exhibit in Sayre. Aug 24 This will be grati- fying news to all who appreciate . and enjoy a high class modern cir- cus performance. The Barnum & Builey show, according to all pre- liminary reports, not only retains Supremancy as the leader in “arenic amusements, but even a cur- sory glance at the list of this year's big features compels the conclusion that its own former records have been surpassed. _ This season's talk- compelling sensations embrace the exciting »Two Twirls of Terror,” in which two death-defying bicyclists turn complete revolutions on their “wheels while shooting through space; the “Dip of Death,” in which a beautiful young American girl “loops the gap” in an automo-~ mobile, and several other “thrillers” that have created unlimited dis. cussion. It is evident, however, that these startliog acts are not permitted to interfere with the general excel- ~ lence of the circus performance, for the roster of great riders, acrobats and aerialists is an exceptionally long and varied one. There are _ also scores of original and novel offerings, quite different from any * thing hitherto presented in the American circus arena; the trained animal features are described as unusually novel and effective; there is an amusing infusion of comedy by a company of up-to-date clowns: the old Roman races are revived of a colossal scale, and a notably complete collection of rare animals (offers an interestiog study to the crowds that visit the big show. There will be no parade by the _ Barnum & Bailey circus, but a sen Return ly Railroad will sell aod every San- Sept. 9th, ckets and returning on all trios on lamp touched the face of the pretty girl In white, but the young man sat In utter darknega. So far as he was concerned It was an outer darkness also. Still, he had made up his mind for the dozenth time to speak up and | end his suspense The previous 11 times his courage had failed at the critical moments. “It's mighty comfortable here on the porch.” he began “Do you think so? asked the girl, vaguely . “It certainly $s" sald the young man, leaning forward “1—1 don't suppose It's just the porch and the flowers, either, that makes It so niece I know I shouldn't enjoy It is the least if some one clve—if you—If you weren't sitting opposite me!” The girl laughed protestingly “You just imagine that” she said “Are you entered in the golf tourna- ment Saturday?” “No—yes—that is—1 dldnt know there was to be a golf tournament.” aid the young man. determinedly brushing the Information aside as not bearing on the subject. “Say, Eliz abeth—" The gir! sprang to her feet with a little shriek and struck madly at the alr. “One of those horrid June bugs!” she gasped. “How | hate them' No, it isn’t la my halr—you'll pull it down it's gone. Let's go Into the house” "Oh, no!“gprotested the young man who realized that golng Into the house meant lights turned on full He knew be never would have the courage to Banish what he wanted to say In a glare. “It's nicer out here!” “l don’t belle®® you care a bit whether those flappy things fly at me or not!” she sald, indignantly, “Care! “erfed the young man, fer vently. “Why, Elizabeth, 1 care so much—I1 wouldn't let anything hurt you for the world [I care The girl had abruptly walked over to the geranlums “My, these need trimming,” she broke In. sweetly “Dog't you think flowers are an awful trouble? “1 should say so” agreed the young man. “As | was saving [ care The girl gave another little shriek and slapped at her arm she sald, penitently. “1-1 futerrupt- ed you Did you say you had entered your name or not?’ “l didn’t say,” repiled the young man. “I was conversing om an en- tirely different subject Why don’t you eit down? You will ind it more com- fortable. | wish you would llsten to me" “Why, Dick!" erfed the girl In bean tifuily polite surprise. “Of course I'm listening! What else could I be do- lng when there's no one else here but you?” “Thank you," sald the young man, bitterly. “I suppose if there were some one else to relieve you from the stupidity of my remarks you'd be only too glad to listen to him!'” “I'm sure | don't know what you mean.” sald the girl with what sound- ed like angelic patience “Really, Dick, you haven't sald much of anything. Your conversation has been well, rather Incoberent thus far to-night!™ “You don’t give me a chance'" he sald, indignantly. “I believe you do it on purpose!” “For mercy’s sake, do what?’ she demanded, clasping her bands and leaning toward him. The young man opened his mouth and shut it again when he reflected on the Impossibility of putting into words just what she was doing. He drew a long sigh and began again: “Elizabeth,” he sald, “it's pot that I bave much to eay, but somehow I can't get It out—and Yéu know—and you won't help. 1—" Th girl gave a startled Jump and brushed something off her gown “Excuse me.” she sald. “Jt just another of those June bugs.” “Funny they don’t bother me any,” sald the young man with suspicion “They're nothing to be afrald of, any- how. Elizabeth, you've got to Heten— there's nothing on earth that cap stop me now, for I will have my say and I'm going to keep on till I've sald It this time without any interrupt—" He sprang to his feet with an ex- clamation, and performed a tolerably good war dance for some seconds He coughed and strangled. “I—one of those confounded things flew down my throat” he explained, between gasps. “Goodness'” sald the girl, sweetly, “Why let a little thing like that ins terupt you? “Ellzadbeth, will yon MArTYy me? the young man almost shouted bhe- tween coughs Thare was a muffled giggle and the girl wurmured: “Oh, Dick. this is so snexpacted! “—Chicago Dally News. use e—— Bp “Excuse me.” W.
