14 pulled into this place yesterday
at 5 o'clock, three young men
made a flying leap from the head
end of the engine and scurried
down the tracks. The Waverly
police were there to greet them
and the cracks of officer Gridley's
revolver startled the bystanders,
but only served to make the fugi-
tives run faster. The police started
in pursuit and officer Gridley, who
pressed a horse and buggy into
service rounded up two of them
near the furniture factory. Erie
detective Fitzgerald, who had fol-
lowed them from Elmira, captured
the other one hidden in a garden
in Howard street. The man started
to run but when the officer pulled
his revolver he decided to sur-
render,
At police headquarters they gave
their names as George Shevers
and Thomas Hawkins of Chicago,
and Henry Sanford of New York.
A report as circulated that they
were prisoners who had escaped
from officers on train 14, and
fully 200 people gathered at the
police headquarters. The charge
placed against them was train-
riding and Justice Hoagland sen-
tenced them to 15 days each in the
county jail at Owego.
