FRON THE STATE|
Borough Council Decides to Ask
Assisience for Road Improve
ment in Sayre
The borough council held a
special meeting last night to take
action on a proposition relative to
improving certain streets. On May
1 last an act was passed by the leg-
islature providing for the improving
of highways in townships and bor-
roughs, the state paying one fourth
the cost thereof, and the borough
or township in which such im-
provement is made liquidating the
remainder. The law practically re
lates to thwnships only, but section
G17 provides that when a towaship
road is completed to a point where
it joins a borough line the borough
authorities may ask to have such
improvement extended through the
borough.
Recently the State highway com.
mission granted an application for
a state road from Greenes Landing
to the Athens borough line, but
the road is not yet constructed
The Athens borough council met
on Tuesday evening for the pur-
pose of asking the commission to
extend the improvement through
the borough, but the matter, after
much discussion, was referred to
the council's attorney, practically
killing it.
Last night the Sayre borough
council! met for the same purpose.
Attorney Yocum, counsel for the
borough, was present and advised
that at the present time the com-
missioner of highways was not in
wm position to grant the rcquest,
should it be asked, as the road im
provement asked for from Greenes
Landing to the Athens borough
line had not been completed, and
until such time as it was, the com-
missioner had no power to act
Mr. Yocum also insisted that as
the borough of Athens had not yet
decided to ask for state aid, that
there was a missing link which
would in itself preclude the state
authorities from taking action.
The matter was given consider-
able discussion and a resolution
was finally passed unanimously to
ask the state highway commissioner
to give the aid asked for. The road
which the borough seeks to ime
prove will commence at the bor-
ough line on the south on Keystone
avenue, and follow the street car
line to the borough line on the
north
According to the provisions of
the law, in the event of the request
being granted the state will pay
three-fourths of the cost, while the
borough will pay the remaining
fourth. As the street car company
under their charter are compelled
to pave between the tracks and
(8 inches cach side of the rails, the
cost to the borough for the im-
Councilmen West, Hassler and
Samuels were appointed a com
mittee to confer with the Athens
borough council, with a view to
getting that bédy to rescind their
action.
TOMORROW "S PARADE
A parade will precede the ball
game which is to be played for the
benefit of the San Francisco fire
sufferers tomorrow afternoon. The
parade which will be headed by
the Packer band will consist of the
hospital ambulance, police patrol,
corps of physicians and surgeons,
nurses, bottle holders, bouncers
and stretcher carriers. The parade
will start from the bank corner at
2:30 o'clock sharp and proceed at
once to the battle ground. Resi
dents are requested to remain in
doors while the parade is passing.

and decided npon a plan of action
After the conference, which lasted

there would be no doubt of their
winning the game. It is intimated
from the other side of the game
that the doctors, when everything
else fails, will probably try to
chloroform their adversaries and
then have a walk over.
