for neglecting to provide for his
wife in a proper manner. Martin
was arrested on warrant sworn out
by County Detective McGovern,
and the circumstances connected
with the case are of a most un-
usual nature. Martin's wife, who
is about 22 years old, is a sufferer
from St. Vitus’ dance, and at times
she is attacked in a most violent
manner, When suffering from one
of the attacks she becomes almost
unmanageable, and if not restrained
does herself bodily irjury. Two
from all sources for the relief of
the San Francisco sufferers. This
money represents that taken from
the small banks which have been |
placed in the various business |
places and also that taken up ia
the collections boxes in the Sayre |
churches. The amount is not large |
but now that a systematic manner |
of collecting money has been in-
augurated it is confidently expected |
that subscriptions will show a large |
increase. This morning the First)

house is alleged to be in a very
unsanitary condition and Mrs.
Martin's personal toilet has become
such that Dr. Haines asserts that
there is no use prescribing medicine
until something is done to better
the surroundings and clean things
up. The matter was reported to
secretary of the board of
health, but as that body hal no
authority to act, several of the
neighbors made a complaint to
District Attorney Mills and that
official decided that Martin was
chargeable with neglect Accord-
ingly an investigation was made
yesterday by County Detective
McGovern, and erbugh evidence
was secured to warrant legal action
being taken. A half dozen wit-
nesses, who at various times had
visited the Martin home, were
sworn, and all testified to prac.
tically the same story. According
to their statements the condition
of the woman is most deplorable.
She tears her clothing from her
body when suffering a violent at.
tack, falls from the bed to the
floor, and her body is covered with
innumerable bruises which she has
received while falling about the
house. The neighbors have Leen
to the house and relieved condi
tions as much as possible, but they
insist that the woman must have
better care,
Martia made a statement in his
own behalf and said that he con-
sidered he had doae all he could
under the circumstances. He called
his father-in-law as a witness, and
while that gentleman did not feel
like blaming Martin altogether, he
admitted that his daughter's home
was not being cared for as it should
be
Mrs. Martin has one child and is
said to be a highly respectable
young woman, who has been over-
taken by misfortune that demands
good care and attention on the part
of her husband
Martin's father<in law qualified
as his bondsman for appearance to
court. The case will come up be-
fore Judge Fanning thé first week
