| | * | ORRSIES THE NEWS It Does Not Have a “Special | Representative’ at Every Cor- | ner of the Globe, But It Gets the News When It Is Fresh The story in yesterday's Record of the appalling disaster which oc- curred in San Francisco yesterday morning, when the city was prac- tically ruined, was so far asthe salient features were, concerned, equal to the accounts published in the city dailies. Except so far as the loss of life is concerned, and which the telegraphic dispatches this morning show has been ma- terially decreased, The Record's story of the disaster was remarkably accurate as to the statement of facts. The Record was not fortun- — | ate enough to have a special repre- sentative in San Francisco, =o that it did not receive a “special” com- munication, but the story was writ- ten in our owa office, the facts therefore being kindly furnished by BAL PLANS AWARDED Council Will Probably Hold «|B Special Meeting to Dispose of |/f This Matter and the Sewer SF Question The town hall committee of the |&) borough council has awarded the |{ contract for making plans and specifications for a proposed new | building to Pierce & Bickford, the |®) Elmira architects. The architects will present plans with and without . I fire proof construction and it is expected that they will be complet- ed without delay. . ¥ The council will probably hold a special meeting some evening next weck to take up the report of the sewer committee who recently vis- ited Harrisburg and presented the plans to the state department of health. The department has rec- ommended that the east side, Mill- town and the northern part of the borough should be included in the plans which lave already been Shot Down at Montour Falls on Sunday Evening Last. Fred Diokerson, a former Le. high Valley ticket agent, who was employed by the company at Itha- ca, was murdered at Montour Falls on Sunday evening. Fred Scobey is under arrest charged with the murder. The murder of Dicker- son is surrouaded in mystery. On Sunday evening a man and woman were out driving near Montour Falls. The woman's husband approached the carriage and'fired five shots into the buggy but none of them took effect. Later in the evening the same man met Dicker- son on the street and fired at him with a revolver. The shot wounded Dickerson so badly that he died shortly afterward. The man then proceeded to pound Dickerson with the butt of the weapon. The man who did the shooting proved to be Scobey and it is said that Dickerson is the min who was out $1.50 to $3.00. It does not have a “special cor- respondent” in every nook aad cor- ner of the globe who is “johnay on the spot” at the critical time, but it is in a position to obtain the facts when an important matter, such as yesterday's disaster, occurs. It has been the custom in this neck of the woods for local newspapers to take garbled street rumors, work them up into a story and then palm the story off on the unsuspecting reader as a “special to the Daily Bazoo” or whatever paper it hap. pens to be, This practice causes the intelligent reader to smile, but the average reader is deceived and appears happy in the deception. The Record, however, does not be- lieve in hoodwinking the public in this manner. We are here to pub lish the news for what it is worth if we know what it is. a t— ANUETY FELF HERE Considerable anxiety is felt in Sayre among those who have friends and relatives in California, and particularly in San Francisco, which was visited by an awful calamity. W. S. Wright, the well known Elmer avenuc grocer, has several relatives in the unfortunate city, and there are also ceveral others whose relatives reside in that place. Whether any of these have been injured is not known at the present time, as the wires run- mng into San Francisco are all down and detailed information is not obtainable.
