Marked the Fall of Southern
Confederacy
Forty-one years ago today wits | [i
of General Lee's army. Time does
not dim the memory of that event
to the Union soldier who was
enthusiasm of victory. General
Phil Sheridan after giving Jubal
Early his final polishing off in the
valley was made chief in command
of the force to make a detour
around Petersburg and strike the
south side of Daaville railroads to
cut off the supplies to the rebel
agmy from Richmond. As they
reachad Dinwiddie Court House a
deluge of rain came down and a
company of officers took refuge in
Widow Crump's hospital mansion,
where they sang rcbel songs with
the young ladies until a late hour
when, they bid them good bye in
the following poetic strain: “Good
bye pgirls—il we don't get shot
we'll come back—otherwise not.”
Reaching Five Forks the cavalry
rode into the works and captured
6,000 prisoners, General Pickett
was holding the works and while
trying his best to resist the attack
a Yankee cavalryman bestride a
mule jumped over the works and
ordered him to surrender. Greece
saved Rome in ancient times and
a mule was the first in the death
struggle of the rebellion,
From here the grand army
made such rapid and destructive
work that the roads were strewn
with the dead. At one place a
Confederate soldier was kneeling
by the body of a fallen comrade
with his hands uplifted as in prayer.
A Union soldier approached him
to accept his surrender or to give
succor if wounded, but he was
shocked to find him dead. Lee ex-
pected to hold the army in check
until he could escapes to Lynch-
burg, and then he hoped to main-
tain guerilla warfare until he could
get favorable terms, but he found
himself cut off and the surrender
followed. After the surrender
General Grant issued returns to
the 20,000 confederate soldiers and
the jig was up.
