Facts Connected With That
Far Off Field of Gold
Athens—Delmer A. Parks is one
of our Athens boys who has seen
quite a large share of the world
and he has had experiences that
would make interesting reading,
were he not too modest to repeat
them. He has been to the Klon
dike, having spent 1897-8 in the|
Yukon region. During the cold
scason all the streams up there
except the Yukon are frozen solid |
and all the water they can get, even
for drinking purposes, is obtained
by melting ice. The great glaciers
are formed of ice that has been
accumulating for centuries, forming |
a solid mass hugdreds of feet thick |
and these occasionally break up|
and come thundering down the
mountain sides into the valleys
below, covering everything in their
way. The gold is obtained from |
the beds of the streams by digging
through the debris that washes
from the mountain side. Mr. Parks |
says that the rich resources of the |
country are only beginning to be
realized.
Mr. Parks returned home as soon |
as the spring warmth opened the
way for him to get out of the,
country. The ‘ground there is
frozen to a depth of a hundred feet
and it takes a long time to thaw
